SOURCE: john deere 420 trouble starting getting gas and

The engine needs air, so be sure the air filter is clean. If it is not, replace it.

The engine needs spark. Replace the spark plug and be sure that the battery has a complete charge.

The engine needs good fuel so be sure the gas is newly purchased, not gas that has been sitting around for months.

SOURCE: john deere runs then stops

I fixed my mower stalling issues on the L111 by loosening the gas cap. I ultimately drilled a hole in the gas cap and screened the hole. Sounds ridiculous but without that venting the engine would run approximately 20 mins and die. It was also much more difficult to start the next time. Something else to pass along to whomever might view this... I replaced the cranking battery with a battery that had allot more cranking amps and I no longer had hard start issues ( this was after I vented the gas cap). Hope this helps.

SOURCE: I have a John deere 317 tractor that does not start.

We will be testing for voltage to the points, coil, engine to tractor wiring harness, ignition switch

Tools needed:
volt meter to read 12 volts, or test light

1) with the points open: is there voltage at the connection wire at the points
If yes; adjust points to .020" and try to crank engine and check for spark
*** you may want to determine if condensor is connected to this wire also
if no
2) check point side (neg or - ) of coil for voltage
if yes, engine should start
if no
3) check for voltage at the + side of coil
If yes, coil is bad
if no
4) check wire connector from engine to frame wiring harness
if yes; engine should start

if no
5) check wiring on the back of ignition switch
if yes; engine should start

if no
6) check that ignition switch RED or BATTERY supply wire has voltage
if yes; switch is bad

if no
7) check supply wire and circuit breaker connected to the battery side of the solenoid
if yes; engine should start

if no; circuit breaker could be at fault or wire connector at battery supply

Sounds like the plug boot may not be on all the way. You may also have to check the spark plug gap.

There should be a switch in the clutch pedal area. Usually safety starts for tractors is that your clutch needs to be depressed to start engine and you need to be seated to turn blades. Good Luck....

John Deere LT 133 lawn tractor quits running after about 10 minutes.

Will it restart right away or does it have to cool down? If it has to cool down, then run it until it quits. Next remove the plug, reattach the plug wire, and ground the plug to the block. Finally try to start it with the key. If you get no spark or very weak spark then the ignition coil needs to be replaced.

Let me know how it goes.

My John Deere lawn tractor starts and runs ok but sputters and quit after usinng a short time and then is hard to restart. Putting gas directly into the carburator and it starts right away.

If you have a fuel solenoid switch on the float bowl you can remove it and replace it with a plug. You can leave the plug disconnected. Did it to mine and it runs better than ever. I think the solenoid get s hot and shuts off the fuel

Have a John Deere L111 lawn tractor with running problems

I had the same problem and I figured out that it was the small hole on top of the gas cap. There is a vent hole on the top/middle and this got plugged with debris and caused a vacum in the gas tank which caused the engine to sputter and kill. Good luck!
