We can enter the cook time, but after pressing start, we don't hear the fan, or see the glass plate rotating, indicating that it is actually not able to heat. The clock counts down about two seconds, but then gives up, as nothing is actually happening.

My microwave only works for 5 seconds and stops. The clock works, timer works, and the child lock works. So not sure what the problem is cus I've powered down for a while, Nothing. This actually happened on Nov 24, 07.

I think I have an older model, NN S542BF. It shuts off after 38 seconds, on the nose and it doesn't appear that it's heating. What the average lifetime of a microwave.

microwave shuts off after just three seconds after start.

  • sfkeatley Jan 14, 2009

My microwave oven NN-S540BFWR was manufactured in January 2003. Today, Jan. 13, 2009, it has this problem: It will run for three seconds and then shut down. Everything else on the unit is working properly. Could you let me know if this is a fixable problem, or has the unit reached the end of it's lifecycle? sfkeatley@cox.net

Ge microwave overhead 2004 model start it up and it will run for 2 seconds and it shut down have to reset time date ect,ect and it might work next time or you may have to wait till the next day before it...

There are a couple of safety thermostats under the cover that can shut down power. One is on the magnetron tube (the microwave source) in case the tube overheats. Another one is on the cooking cavity to shut the oven off if something catches fire while cooking. These interrupt the power, same as unplugging the oven, which is why you need to reset everything.

It's possible that because of the oven's age, the magnetron tube is weak enough that it's overheating when it tries cooking. As the tube ages it works harder and gets hotter. But it usually takes more than a couple of seconds for the thermostat to operate. These thermostats sometimes go bad on their own and operate too soon.

Other possible causes for power loss are a fuse loose in its holder or intermittent connections to the control circuit board.

Since troubleshooting power problems means working on the oven with the cover off and the power on, you should leave repairs to a professional. MICROWAVE OVENS USE HAZARDOUS VOLTAGES WHICH CAN KILL YOU. Let a professional check the oven and give an estimate for the repair. Given the age of the oven you may want to consider replacing rather than repairing this one, but let cost be your guide.

Panasonic Inverter Micowave only runs for four seconds

If the digital programmer circuit / controller does not get a feedback signal from the inverter for a period of 3 seconds, the controller will stop the cook cycle.

It may be a loose connection in the wiring between the inverter, magnetron, and/or control board, or maybe one of those components has failed.

Due to the lethal voltages used and produced in inverters, I do not recommend that an inexperienced person work on these.

R957 cooks for 59 seconds then stops ,resumes for 59 seconds if cook /start pressed all cooking modes affected kitchen timer works ok

This is a problem in one of the damper-related components, most likely the switch, but it may also be the motor or the damper door.

The damper is a door inside that opens or closes depending on cooking mode. If the controller senses that the door is not in the right position, it will shut down the cook cycle.

Sharp models stop after 59 seconds.

See the attached sample photo for a typical damper assembly.

You can probably find exploded views and order parts by entering your model number here at the Sears parts site. The best place to order Sharp parts is Tritronics.
