Change the Flex cable that connects from main chassis to the front face plate. This is a common problem with Dual drop down face plates, since the flexible wires break and lose connection.
What part is missing? Is it just the faceplate, or the gear mechanism as well?
I have one of these that the ribbon cable is bad and can't seem to find a replacement. I am debating just buying a new stereo. If i do, I could sell you the faceplate. email me at rad73082 (at) yahoo
Same problem as yours with my deck. Bought the deck a month ago, turned car on in the morning face plate does not move down, music plays everything ok but can not access the cd or move the plate regadless button pushing. Have you tried the reset button? Hold it for 3 seconds ( ball point pen to press the button above power button) U will lose the presets but Oh weel. I am going to remove power completey from the unit later on today, and if it still has issues I am returning it for a replacement ( Bought it form Best Buy) L8R
The face plate buttons actually activate small buttons on a printed circuit board behind the face plate. When I removed the radio and then the face plate many small pieces of plastic fell from behind the face plate. These small plastic pieces align the face plate button to the printed circuit board buttons. My Beeetle is almost 10 1/2 years old so I imagine the plastic is just becoming brittle with age. I could not set the radio to FM, so I removed the face plate button and now slide a toothpick in the slot to toggle between FM1 & FM2. Not he best solution, but probably the most inexpensive one. I also made my on tool to remove the radio from a diagram found at: http://www.alientech.net/nbinfo/stereo.html
I'm assuming that you installed the head-unit new and that the faceplate did (at one time) previously slide down the way it was intended to work - is this assumption correct?
Is the molding around the head faceplate (mounting ring) damaged?
Are you sure you're not using the semi-permanent mounting configuration??
(see page 6 of the manual)
This particular unit has the option for a semi-permanent mounting of the face plate. If the two screws are inserted into the sides, it will lock the face plate in to the head unit (have you done that?) - if so, removing the screws will allow the face plate to be removed.
you must remove all the plastic face plates around the radio then remove the radio itself.be cautious as you could damage the clips that hold the plates in place.
