SOURCE: Door is not latching

If you gently push up on the door latches (hook-like devices on the door) there should be spring tension. If they just flop right up, the spring is off.

Normally the problem is not the spring, but a broken spring mounting tab on the door latch head (hook) assembly or the inner door panel.

If it's the door panel, it's usually easier and cheaper to use epoxy and some kind of hardware to fashion a new spring mount.

The door latch head (hook) is easy to replace or repair if that's the issue.

We have the service manual for this model and have uploaded it to our site here to help you. You will need the free Adobe Reader to view or print it.

To get into the door, normally you have to separate the door panels (as shown in the attached photo) and then you'll see the previously hidden screws you need to remove.

The manual shows that, or you can watch a YouTube video (not a video I made) here that demonstrates how it's done.

The best place to order Sharp parts is Tritronics.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

F22 error persists on my washer, does the door gasket have to do with it?

F22 is usually a door latch error on Kenmore washers so you are working on the right area. The door gasket rip should not cause that unless it is stopping the door from closing all the way. It is usually the door latch itself which has switches built into it that causes that error or the main board is not reading the latch operation.

Maytag Neptune front loader door latch won't release

rewpa, 98% chance the door latch has stuck in the locked position. Yes, follow Maytags suggestion to access the "rip cord" for the door latch... (this is the mechanical override for it) to get the door open. After it's open, run another load of wash and see if it happens again. If it does, it is the door latch assy. that's the problem. BTW, the door lock light is activated by a switch in the door latch assy. There's a "motor" in the assy... it's made of WAX! Yes, a "wax motor". Before the computer goes into spin, it sends 120V to this motor. The electricity heats the wax and it expands. As it expands, it pushes a plunger forward. This plunger trips both the door lock AND the switch. This sends the signal to the door light AND the computer saying "I'm locked! Go ahead and Spin!" When the cycle is complete, the computer drops the voltage to the wax motor. The wax cools off and contracts. This retracts the plunger... opening the door and shutting off the light. So... if this light stays on, the plunger is still extended and can be overridden using the rip cord. If this happens again, let me know and I'll step you through disassembly and replacement of the wax motor.

hello joan. check to be sure that the door properly latches when it opens and closes with out locking it at all. sometimes the latch does not easily and freely go into the latch hole as the latch hole needs to be adjusted. joe

Instructions to replace door lock assembly

Hello,(1)Open the door and remove the two screws in the door lock latch plate on the edge of the door by backing them out with a Phillips screwdriver in a counter clockwise direction.
(2)Remove the two screws (located on the interior lock face plate)holding both halves of the lock assembly to the door by backing them out with a Phillips screwdriver in a counter clockwise direction, pull each side of the lock assembly from the door, using a flat blade screwdriver to pry them off if needed. (3)Pry the latch bolt out of the door by inserting the edge of a flat blade screwdriver under the latch plate on the edge of the door.slide the latch assembly out and set aside.(4)Insert the new latch assembly into the hole left by the old latch bolt.Trim the recessed opening with a sharp chisel if the new lock latch plate is larger than the old latch plate.Secure the latch to the door with the two screws provided by turning them in a clockwise direction with a Phillips screwdriver.(5)Hold both side of the new lock assembly to the holes in the faceof the door.Line up the shaft from the lock cylinder into the slotted hole in the latch assembly.Make sure the lock face plate with the screw holes is facing the inside.Attach the lock assembly to the door by turning in the screws with a Phillips screwdriver in clockwise direction.(6)Remove the old striker plate from the door jamb by backing out the two screws with a Phillips screwdriver in a counter clockwise direction.Install the striker plate that came with lock kit with the screws provided using a Phillips screwdriver in clockwise direction.

Door panel

Check this procedure...
  1. Unbolt and remove the inside door latch and remove the latch panel retaining screws.
  2. Disconnect the door latch control linkage and, if equipped, wiring harness. Remove the control panel.
  3. If equipped with manual windows, remove the window crank handles.
  4. Remove the armrest lower retaining screws and swing the armrest downward to disengage the upper retaining clip. Pull the armrest straight out from the door panel.
  5. Starting at the bottom of the door panel, use a flat tool, such as a wood spatula, pry out the panel-to-door frame retaining pins by levering right up against the pin. If a forked-end tool is available, use one. These pins are easy to rip out of the trim panel.
  6. Installation is the reverse of removal. A firm hit with the heel of your palm is usually enough to drive the retainers into the holes in the door panel. Make sure that the retainer is directly over the hole before knocking it in, or it may be damaged.
Hope this helped (remember rated this).

Drivers do will not open

very difficult. you literally must rip the door trim panel off the door. its made to come off with the door open. sounds like the actuator cable for the latch is disconnected or broken. just because the lock looks unlocked that dosent mean it is, it may be the lock cable at the latch. the latch assy is located inside the door.
