How to remove and install a starter motor

It is impossible to provide a suggested diagnosis without knowing the YEAR, MAKE, and MODEL of your vehicle.
Beyond that, your question is far too vague.
Replacing a starter on MOST (not all) vehicles is a fairly straightforward procedure. It generally entails disconnecting the battery negative terminal, removing the sires from the starter, supporting the starter while removing two to four bolts, pulling the starter, then reversing the procedure to install the new starter installing starter shims to accommodate for any misalignment of the new starter.

How do i remove a 1982 kawasaki kz 1000 starter motor

Follow the specific instructions in the Factory Service Manual. Step 1 - Remove the heavy wire from the starter solenoid. Either end will suffice. Step 2 - Remove the chrome cover over the starter. Step 3 - remove the screws that hold the starter motor in place. Step 4 - Lift the starter motor out of the engine. NOTE: removing the carbs may make this step simpler. The "business" end of the starter should come out of the splined starter clutch gear. If you have trouble removing the starter from the clutch gear, you may need to remove the left side stator cover to gain access to the starter clutch and chain. Prior to removing the solenoid from the starter motor unit, matchmark the solenoid-to-starter motor housing position, as shown in the accompanying illustration.
  1. Remove the starter motor from the vehicle.
  2. Detach the solenoid-to-starter motor wire from the solenoid terminal.

Do not disassemble the solenoid; if the solenoid is defective, replace the entire unit with a new one.

To install:
  1. Inspect the solenoid plunger joint for wear or other damage. Replace it, if damage is evident.
  2. Apply Suzuki Super Grease A (99000-25010) or equivalent, to the solenoid plunger and to the tip of the lever arm (inside the starter motor-to-solenoid housing hole).
  3. Insert the solenoid into the starter motor housing, ensuring that the matchmarks made during removal are aligned.
  4. Install and tighten the two attaching screws securely.
  5. Attach the starter motor-to-solenoid wire to the solenoid terminal.
  6. While the starter motor is removed form the vehicle, perform the testing procedure to ensure that the new solenoid functions properly.
  7. Install the starter motor.

Hope this help (remember rated and comment this).

Brushes in starter

Yes. It can be done. The starter motor is located outside the engine block so it should be easy to take it out. from there, you may disassemble the starter motor and replace the carbon brush as you wish.

Starter motor.

Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

Jack it up. You're going underneath so chock the wheels and use jack stands. Be safe.

Remove all wires from the solenoid.
Depending on your flexibility, it may be easier to drop the starter before removing the wires. If you do, don't let it hang by the wires.

On a 4.0, there is an oil cooler line bracket on the exhaust brace.
Remove it.

Remove all but one attaching bolts from the starter. Loosen the last one.

The starter is heavy, support it and pull the last bolt.

Slide the starter out of the mounting hole and lower it down.

While you're down there inspect the flywheel teeth for damage.

Hope this helps,

Mike
