SOURCE: How to install rear hatch door struts on a 97Astrovan

in case you havent figured it out, or for the next person that needs help. . .

i needed to replace my rear window struts.
i stuck a flathead screw driver in each of the metal clips at each end of the strut and pryed them loose. the struts popped right off the mounts. i also unscrewed the rear speaker panel so i could remove the wire connecting the strut to the car (rear defroster?) and remove completely. i wanted to take the whole unit to the autoparts store and compare it to the new strut. when buying replacements, i noticed the new struts did not come with the electrical housing on the upper end, just a male thread. i was stumped because i couldnt get the housing off of the old strut . . .i didnt want to damage it trying.

i finally i got the nerve. all it took was a pair of channel locks (pliers). grip the rod tight enough to unscrew the housing from the rod. after breaking loose, it should come right off easily.

i realized after that i didnt need to open the speaker panel and disconnect the wire. i probably could have just unhooked the strut and unscrewed the housing (while the wire remained connected to the van), screwed the new strut back into the housing, and reattached the strut to the van.

installation is the opposite of removal. i also read on a few sites that its a good idea to replace them both at the same time.

How to remove tailgate struts?

If you mean standard tailgate supports, no electric / pneumatic or power ones. Then you just lower the tailgate and bend the "v" hinges upwards until they come off, or cables on newer trucks, and lift gate to a 45 degree angle and they pull right off. If you mean industrial style heavy duty stuff, re post this question and I'll send you a wide variety of schematics. I have info from everything from right hand drive 3 cylinder pick ups, up to big rigs and even some VERY heavy equipment. Hope I helped. Grimm

How to change stuts

  • Rent a spring compressor before you start removing the old struts and putting on the new ones. You can rent a spring compressor at any auto store. You can also buy one, but if you are only going to use the compressor once, it's best to simply rent it. Jack up the car and remove the tire. Then place one jack stand on the side you are working on.
  • 2 Loosen the two lower bolts that hold the brake line to the strut you want to remove. Remove the cap covering the top of the strut, and while holding the coil over the strut, remove three nuts. Pull out the cover to the strut assembly.
  • 3 Tighten the spring using the spring compressor and remove the nut at the top of the strut. Decompress the spring, and the strut will be freed from the spring. Remove the front strut.
  • 4 Put in the new strut and bolt it back up. Replace the tire. You now have the old strut removed and the new one in place.
  • 5 Repeat Steps 1 through 4 when removing and replacing the rear strut.

  • I hope this helps!!! Thanks!!!

Help replacing the front struts on 89 VW Cab

You'll need to remove the upper strut mount nut. Unbolt the 2 bolts from strut to the wheel hub. Remove the strut unit from the car. You'll need a coil spring compressor to compress the spring to unscrew the strut bushing, remove the strut mount and remove the spring from the strut, install the spring to the new strut and reassemble. You'll be better off to get the whole strut, instead of the replacement cartridge, it's often hard to remove the old one from the old housing. Don't forget to replace the strut mount and strut bushing.

How to instll front struts on 1998 Ford Escort?

You "do not" need a strut spring compressor to change the struts on a 1998 ford escort.

Place the front of the car on jack stands, and remove the front tires.

Disconnect and remove the 2 bolts (at the bottom of the strut) that attach the strut to the knuckle (you may need air impact to break them free).

Remove the brake lines from the line retainer on the strut: If you open the brake lines you will need brake fluid, and need to bleed the brake system (to avoid opening the brake system, cut the line retainer from the old strut).

Inside the hood remove the circular cap that covers the top retaining nut on the strut. Remove the top retaining nut, then remove the strut.

Install new struts in reverse. To align the new strut to the knuckle, use a screwdriver to start the aligment, then insert the retaining bolts. If you cut the brake line retainers from the old struts, use plastic zip ties to attach the brake lines to the new struts.
