a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

I just called Brothers product support and found out that these machines WILL NOT scan or copy or do anything until the ink cartridges have been replaced. So there is no other solution.

To scan legal documents you need to set the scanner to legal. GO to Start menu / all programs / brother / scanner utility and set the size to legal.

The first thing that I would try multiple people to ask them to fax you.Sometimes the 2 machines don't "sync".This is a toll free fax test number that I always use to check my machines..1-888-473-2963.Just write the words "FAX TEST" in large letters on a blank sheet of paper..fax it to that number...leave the line open...you should get a fax back in about a minute. If you get a fax back...your machine is fine...let me know if this was helpful....thanks.

I would imagine their is a fuse inside somewhere ,open it up and look around where the power cable comes in but first pull the power cable out and check for power on the end with a multimeter

Had a similar problem with a HP laserjet and after much searching discovered a tiny piece of paper stuck in the printer. When you remove jammed paper make sure that you follow the manufacturers instructions, and verify that no torn off bits remain in the printer. A piece of paper 2mm wide or less could be the cause of all your problems and can be very hard to find.
Use a torch.

Tips for a great answer:
Aug 28, 2012 | Brother MFC 7420 All-In-One Laser Printer
Dec 14, 2011 | Brother MFC 7840W Printer
Oct 18, 2011 | Brother MFC-685cw InkJet Printer
From past experience and current research, you can not scan with an error on the LCD screen. Therefore you would have to replace the ink before the scanner will work.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
