SOURCE: I have an old Olivetti

Hello.

From FixYa Support:

There is a Carriage Return release lever on the far right of the typewriter that engages a notch on the underside of the roller/carriage return. Push the it forward to release the lever. It has a spoon-shaped end and it's on the right side. If necessary,
pry the jammed release lever with a screwdriver.

Hope this resolves your problem.

Olivetti ET121 the R does not work

If both upper and lower case don't work you have a keyboard problem. If it's just one or the other you need a printwheel.

I just opened my typewriter and i've set everything but when i go to type, nothing moves. i'm pretty sure it's supposed to automatically shift so that i can continue typing freely but it doesn't do that!...

there is probably a carraige lock, to lock the carraige in place during transit. its usually a small lever under the carraige on the right of left side. if you have a manual, it should be in there. or it could be that the margin is set there. try resetting the margins.

Keys sticking. The keys at both ends are sticking or won't go all the way up and strike the paper.

Try trickling some White Spirit into the typebar slots and working the keys repeatedly.

Can't find carriage lock on Olivetti Lettera 25

Learn how to unlock the carriage in Olivetti Lettera 22 Manual posted by Ed Cornish (Carriage Locking Lever 7). It is a different machine model, but the lock/unlock mechanism might be the same.
You can see the full manual at Ed’s Flickr account or you can download it from here: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1322442/Olivetti%20Lettera%2022%20Manual.pdf (temporary link)

Sounds like the cog belt or timing belt from the motor to the mainshaft has broken and fallen off.
