If the battery on the motherboard dies, the date and time might not be remembered, but the BIOS should at least have default settings.. Have you pressed the "Del" key during Startup to change BIOS settings? This is a copy of the manual for that mb..
Start on page 51 to see how to enter the BIOS and make changes. There are some explanations of different settings.

Laptop wont boot and can not get to boot menu or bios setup

Try this: Pull the battery and power cord. Now hold the power button in for about 30 seconds. Plug the power cord back in (DO NOT put the battery in yet). Now try to power up the computer, if it boots fully, shut it down and put the battery back in. Then boot it up again. This will sometimes work. If it fails to boot with the battery in (yes I have seen this too) replace the battery.
If it fails to boot with just the power cord and you are getting no beeps, trying pulling the memory. Most laptops will have two slots for memory and a chip in each slot. Turn off the laptop, remove both chips, then place one back in. Try to boot, then power down again and try just the other chip. If it fails to boot on one chip, that would be the bad memory. If it fails on both, try the same steps with the other slot. If it works on the other slot, you have a bad memory slot.
If non of the above work, you may need to take the laptop apart to get to the bois battery. Removing this battery, with no power to the computer (plug or big battery) will reset the bios and may clear your issue.
Go with the easy steps fist, and I hope they work.

Ibm thinkcenter s50 xp pro:intermitant locks on boot up display(IBM)cant enter bios unless i remove the batery and put back again works ok for a day or two then same again is there any post action i should...

The BIOS gets corrupted. Replace the battery immediately, load the recommended settings in the BIOS and use the pc like that for a few days. If after that you still get the same problem then the BIOS chip is failing. In that case the only thing you can do is to replace the motherboard.
In the mean time do a full backup, in case it might fail for good.

I have just purchased a new sony battery. my model no. is sony vaio VGN CR510E/L. The laptop doesnt recognize the new battery BPS9 and it says update the bios. i just downloaded the sofware bps9.exe but...

If the battery is not a Sony battery but an equivalent, the Sony may not recognize it as there is not the specified "bit" of information built in to it. It maybe just totally flat in which case it will take a number of hours on charge to get it recognized.
The BIOS upgrade must be done with a good battery fitted and the AC Adapter working otherwise if the power fails whilst loading, you cannot recover the BIOS again.

Bios setting problem?

Optimal Defaults and Fail Safe Defaults are two different sets of values. If you set one after the other the second would have replaced the first. Try setting back to optimal again.

If you still see errors relating to the Ethernet adapter find the Ethernet adapter in your BIOS settings and set it to Auto. If you still see errors try all of the available Ethernet settings.

Hope this helps you get your computer running again.

Acer 9300 bios upgrade failed

I have the same problem, and my problem was that I have installed 4GB ram and that ram modules wasn't accepted with the new bios. So I installed the old modules and it all worked again, downgraded the bios to one version older and installed my 4GB ram modules and it all worked.

Hope that's your problem too.
Good luck

Acer travelmate 4650, after bios flashing, no display.thanks.

HI there
Sounds like the bios flash has failed, the only thing you can do now is try to flash again, make sure you have the right bios update for that model machine, suggest you get a USB floppy drive so you are able to re-flash the bios, if it still doesn't work then the machine is rendered useless.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!!

Maintaining Date/Time

This is case of a 'keep-alive' battery going flat and unfortunately is on the main p.c board and you will have to dismantle the camera starting from the rear to get to it. Located next to the flash main capacitor on the main board.
