An error was detected while the lens was in motion, and the power has been automatically turned off. This error can occur if you hold the lens while it is in motion or you operate it in a location with excessive dust or sand in the air. Try turning the power back on, and resume shooting or playback. If this message continues to display, contact your Canon Costumer Support Help Desk as there may be a problem with the lens. This is what the manual says.
It could be you are using a conversion lens adapter, that is not correct installed. (or a different one than was ordered in the manual.) Canon has lots of different of these adapters, that only slightly differ, depending for what model they are.Make sure you have the one that is for the G10. (LA-DC58K)
Could be the ring that has to be removed to place the conversion lens adapter is not placed correct. Or even something as one grain of sand, sifting in the housing, can block the lens barrel, from coming out. If last time you used the camera was on the beach, i think I know where the sand could have come from. (it happened me once)
If you can't be sure the lens can move free, you should go to a Canon Costumer Support Help Desk as told in the manual.

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...
Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may (or may not) correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them.

Powershot e1 says lens error, restart camera and won't work

Were you at the beach? If so, it more likely started when a single grain of sand clung to the side of the camera's lens barrel while it was being closed.

"Lens error - restart camera" message, but won't restart

I just had the same issue when one of my children drop the camera. I'm not wanting to break anyone's camera but I was able to open the lens cover and pull the lens out and then turning it on it retracted and worked just like it should.
