We bought our daughter a '99 Cavalier over the weekend, were thrilled to find it because it only has 43K miles on it. I am concerned at the amount of oil on and around the engine. My husband is not too concerned because the car does not leave any oil under it and it seems to have good power and no gauge or lights warning us. Is this alright that the engine be oily and grimy? Also, there is a popping noise when you are driving at a slower speed and making turns, like into parking lots etc. What might that be? Last issue, the reverse lights do not work, where do we start, the fuse box?
You dont state the engine size. A ny oil leak whether dripping on the floor or remaining on the engine should be investigated as there should NOT BE ANY WET OIL LEAK. Grime is another story and should be cleaned appropriately. The "popping " noise you're hearing turning slowly sounds likw a bad CV ( constant velocity ) joint on the front axle. There are 2 cv joints on each front axle. Possilble leaking boot throwing grease near the back of the front wheel to indicate which joint is noisy. Check the B/U light fuse. Hope this helps.
The popping noises are your cv joints. They probably need replacing but if your lucky just servicing. Can't help with other problems.
Good Luck
Its ten years old some oil leaks are normal .the poping noise is most likely front sway bar links . as for reverse lights check reverse bulbs first .
