HP dv7 Display toggle problem

Hey, My laptop is always connected to an external monitor using HDMI, usually on extend. When I use the display toggle (Fn+f4) to disconnect the external monitor the laptop screen blinks and then stops working all together. So do the keyboard and touch pad. My display only comes up on the external monitor. If I wait for awhile everything goes back to normal but it happens almost every time. Any idea how to stop this from happening?

What PC full name? what OS?
so are you saying you want both screens the same time.?
the operators guide answer this.
dV7, what, you didnt post the full model. ,
lots of DV7 made. 1000 to 6000 series. sorry cant guess.
is sleep mode off
and screen saver off/ hibenate off.
id read the users guide first, see what options are featured, on YOUR PC. 29 classes of dv7 and subclasses.

https://support.hp.com/us-en/products/laptops/pavilion-notebooks

read your service tag to learn what you have.
then go here
WHAT OS came with your PC day1 new.,
is the current OS same as DAY1.? or upgraded some why..
if upgraded, to what?

all the 1000 series book says is this, "says it alternates"

SOURCE: Toggle Between Laptop and Monitor

Fn + F5 toggles the display output, the trick here to wait each time you hit this combination because it goes through several options. Hit it once and it may want to go to just the external, then both the laptop screen and the external. etc. Now Fn + F6 turns the backlight bulb off on the internal monitor to save energy. Now I am giving up the link to your service manual, it is in PDF format so you can make a copy for yourself and keep on the laptop, print it or save it to a flash so you can reference it later. I believe if you take the keyboard off and disconnect the video lead on the left side where the display plugs into the motherboard, then when you power the laptop back up it will default to the external cord and you can use the laptop without any switching. That is what I am doing with an Aspire 5920 that I am rebuilding. Good luck, ParrotHead PC Repair
Just copy and paste the link below to you internet address bar and hit enter.

I would back mothmans answer 100% but might suggest you re-assemble the display to the laptop if you continue to have problems getting an external display going.

Are you enabling the external display feature? The HDMI must be enabled from the laptop keyboard before it will output. This is done with the "Fn" Key (lower left next to Windows key + the F5 key. This is a 3-way toggle. The default is normal screen. First toggle switches to external (HDMI), second toggle to both screens, and the third back to normal.

This excerpt from your User's Guide:

<Fn> + <F5> Display toggle
Switches display output between the display screen,
external monitor (if connected) and both.

How about looking at a screen?

Use an external monitor

Briefly;

Your laptop has an external display device port. (Connector)
I do not know what it is, because you didn't state the laptop manufacturer name, and model number; Elizabeth

It may be a VGA port, or HDMI port, or Mini-HDMI port; or DVI port

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_Connector

(Scroll down for VGA Cable example)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI

(You can click on any photo, and it will enlarge)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:HDMI_Connector.jpg

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface

Laptop OFF, monitor OFF, connect the external display device to the laptop.
(VGA = Monitor. DVI = Monitor. HDMI, and Mini-HDMI usually = HDTV. They all compromise an external display device)

Turn the monitor/HDTV on.
Turn the laptop on.
By factory default settings, the display should show on the external display device.
IF not;

There are at least 3 display options. For this example I'm going to use a VGA monitor.
(For a VGA monitor you can use a CRT type of monitor. Looks like a small TV. Or you can use a flat LCD screen monitor, if it has a VGA Cable attached)

The basic 3 display options using a VGA monitor are;
1) Internal monitor of laptop ONLY
2) Internal monitor of laptop AND external VGA monitor
3) External VGA monitor ONLY

Hold the Fn key down, and at the SAME time tap once on the Display Toggle-Over key.

Which key is that? Dunno. Laptop manufacturer name, and ......................

It will be one of the F keys at the top. F1 through F12.
The Function key will have a monitor icon on it, and usually an arrow on one side........Or perhaps two monitor icons sitting side by side.
(Empty rectangle is a monitor icon)

Still no display on external display device?
Hold the Fn key down again, and tap once more on the Display Toggle-Over key

[If memory serves for Display Toggle-Over key;
HP = F4
Acer = F5
Toshiba = F5
IBM/Lenovo = F8

Don't write that in stone, however.......]

Once you post the manufacturer name, and model number; then I can guide you step by step.

Post back in a Comment.

My laptop is vga,so i have bought a vga cable,and a converter box with HDMI cable. My samsung series 5 tv will not pick up the laptop. i have tried all the options available but it just says check devices...

Wouldn't it be NICE to know what laptop you are referring to

Oh well...........maybe one day

By factory default settings the display should automatically show in the external VGA monitor. (TV. Whatever)

HOWEVER;
Your laptop has at least 3 display options;
1) Internal monitor of laptop ONLY
2) Internal monitor of laptop AND external VGA monitor
3) External VGA monitor ONLY

By factory default settings the display should automatically show in the external VGA monitor. (TV. Whatever)

Press, and hold the Fn key down, and at the same time tap once on the Display Toggle-Over key.
Which key is the Display Toggle-Over key?
Dunno. Laptop manufacturer and model number wasn't stated.

(One of the F keys at the top.
Generally;
Acer = F5
HP = F4
Lenovo/IBM = F10
Dell = F8, unless it's Alienware - F6)

Did that? That's how it worked on your friend's TV?
Then your TV is the problem.
Settings I assume. NOT a TV tech.

How do I hook a an external monitor up to a hp dv6 1355 with a cracked screen?

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=4043282&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&cc=us

Product information > Product specifications > Product specifications;

External Ports:
1 VGA (15-pin)

Manuals > Notebook Tour - Windows 7;

Left-side Components - External Monitor Port
Left/Rear side of laptop,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_connector

You can use a CRT type of monitor (Looks like a small TV), or a flat LCD screen monitor if it has a VGA cable.

(You can also use an HDTV if it has an HDMI port, and you have an HDMI cable. The HDMI port is on the Left side of the laptop, too.

{Don't buy an HDMI cable that is expensive. Just a waste of money.
Those gold plated parts are just a little bit better, than an HDMI cable that doesn't have it. $20 for an HDMI cable is PLENTY. (12 Feet) I use one's that cost less )

A) Laptop OFF, monitor (External display device) OFF.
Connect the VGA monitor to the VGA port, on the laptop.

Turn the monitor on. If a CRT type allow it to warm up.
Turn the laptop on.

There ARE at least 3 display options available;

1) Internal monitor ONLY
2) Internal monitor AND external display device (VGA monitor in this example)
3) External display device ONLY

Press, and hold the Fn key down, tap once on the F4 key.
(The F4 key is the Display Toggle-Over key)

Wait a few seconds.
Still no?
Hold the Fn key down again, and tap once more on the F4 key.

After plugging it in, you'll need to actually tell your laptop to use the 2nd display and select an appropriate resolution. Go to display settings, select 2nd display, and select "extend display to this display".

Trouble hooking external Viewsonic monitor to Toshiba laptop

If I understand You are using a Monitor connecting the Monitor...
and the background is shared byboth the display however the Cursor stays only on one of them at a time.However it can be toggled among the 2.

If yes,
then this Feature is called the Extended Display.
Use the same Key Combination that you would use for external Display one More time and it should Work.
