Open Question

Dismantle wd800u017-001 I have a wd800u017-001 80 GB Passport Ext HD. It is clicking when it is connected so it will be crashing soon. I am trying to find instructions on how to open the enclosure so I can install another 320 GB ide drive from a laptop into the enclosure. Does anyone know how to open the enclosure so I do not destroy the case?

SOURCE: WD Passport Elite 320 - won't install autobackup launcher

The problems is this: at this point, Western Digital is not supporting Vista 64-bit with any of their related software. Granted, some things will still work while using the 32-bit version, but some won't, and the backup software is a prime example of the latter.

You might try downloading the latest version of the software from here:

http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=204&lang=en

Chances are, it will still barf, but it can't hurt to try it out. An alternative is to use another backup application; the one included with Vista ought to work. I wish I had better news, and believe me, as a user of both XP 64 and Vista 64, I feel your pain.

Cheers

Nick

SOURCE: Using the 160GB passportHard drive

are there any errors that popped up while copying the music files? if not, then it probably works fine. the files are now stored on the harddrive.
if you want to safely unplug and carry the HD over to another computer, you can., the files should be accessible... that's all a harddive does.

Download Norton disk doctor from their website and run it. Most of the problems with partitions, boot sectors ( soft defects) will be fixed automatically.

I can't open my Ext.hd passport 500gb WX40A69V7960. I see the icon im "my computer" but i can't opened.

It sounds like the drive hasnt been partitioned or formated, you will have to use a partitioning software like FDISK to partition the drive, then format the drive in windows, you may not get the full 500 gb most you are likly to get is around 480gb

The drive had a Head Crash. You could try Data Recovery Software in order to recover important data, but other than that it is useless for further use.

Seagate Freeagent 500gb Ext. HD not working.

Hi,
it´s my first time on this topic, but I´d recommend reinstalling it´s drivers, it sounds like it´s stuck there. Or just to be sure it is working ok, the both connections, esata and usb. If any of them work it´s ok. If not, come back, we´ll figure something out for you.

Delete that video in other pc's with deepfreeze to keep away from system failure. You need to scan your passport, vista is more tricky than xp anything about viruses will cause them to freeze or to reboot on their own to prevent system failure.

To format the drive to allow files larger then 4GB: Open up My Computer, Right click on the Western Digital Drive. Select Format from the list. Under file System, select NTFS. Under format options Check Quick Format. Click Start to format.

Warning! Formatting will delete all data and files on the drive. Make sure to transfer all your files to another drive before preforming a format!
