SOURCE: Eratic function

it is the control valve - however not in the sense that IT is bad - the thermocouple on your unit is bad.

The purpose of the thermocouple is to convert the heat from the pilot to a miniscule amount of energy that the control valve senses letting it know the pilot is present... a default safety so gas does not fill the house!

With no pilot (which you have) or no SIGNAL to the control valve, it will not open to allow the burners fuel for ignition.

Sometimes the thermocouple is out of position (should be at the tip of the pilot light)...

Sometimes it is covered in soot, and can be cleaned with a fine sandpaper...

Sometimes it needs to be replaced altogether.

Most thermocouples are generic, but some are a specific value. Check with your manufacturer for a part #.

The BL6414 motor is shaded pole and does not require a capacitor.

The single lead goes to one leg, the split wired leg in the same spade goes to the other. They are usually yellow wires. As far as Hayward, Jacuzzi and Starite are concerned.

Sorry, but no. Reversible AC motors are very different. Without that design difference (which adds cost) you can't reverse it. Your label is telling you that you don't have the special kind of motor.

SOURCE: how to remove motor AO Smith Model C48K2N143CIC

Take off the rear cover as to expose the capacitor. Remove capacitor. Place a 7/16 wrench on the shaft threw the opening where you removed the capacitor. Put a rag on the impeller and with a wrench turn it counterclockwise. It should come off easily. Make sure you replace the seals before reassembling

How to replace anode in Reliance 6402ORS

Anode can be connected to, and part of hot water nipple.
This is called combo anode rod.

There are also instances where the anode is on top, but does not line up with access holes.
This is more typical with older water heaters.

Don't forget to clean air intake located on bottom of unit, using feather duster or compressed air.

Year of manufacture for Reliance is 2nd and 3rd digit of serial number located on label on side of tank.
Reliance is owned by AO Smith.

Water heater anode

If you have power vent, the anode might be located in a separate port on the top under the power vent.
Otherwise, the anode can be a 'combo' and connected to hot water nipple.

GPS-75-200 anode replacement

The anode is located under the power vent.
Remove power vent to gain access.
Otherwise, remove Hot water nipple and install combo anode rod. If odor is the reason for replacement, then installing a combo without removing the old anode will not solve odor problem until old anode completely dissolves over time.
Copy following link for specific information and illustrations, including odor elimination using hydrogen peroxide.

For easy access next time, you can remove old anode and plug hole, and then install combo rod.
If longevity of tank is reason you are accessing the anode, you can add a second combo anode in addition to the original anode and give longer protection

AO Smith Water heater FPSH50-260 keeps blowing fuses

FPSH series is a power vented residential gas water heater.

1) The blower is plugged into 120Volt outlet. If blower has short, then it will trip breaker.
Blower could be Fasco model 7021-10195, or 7021-10770. Call AO Smith: 1-800-527-1953. They will need model number and serial number located on label on side of tank.

2) Before calling AO Smith, check outlet with circuit analyzer. Outlet must have correct polarity and must be grounded. Unplug cord to water heater and run continuity test from ground prong on electrical plug to manifold tube on gas valve.

3) Also if a fluorescent light fixture is on the same breaker, that can cause burner to short cycle.

4) Connect water heater to different outlet and see if problem continues.

5) AO SmIth has service manuals for the FPSH series that download to your computer:

I have a hot water heater model # EES 52917. It is 8 years old. The tank has rusted around the top heating element. Why has this happened and what can be done about this issue. From what I understand...

AO Smith is biggest manufacturer and ships about 140,000 units per month sold under different brands. Look at rating on tank. Is it a 9 year tank? Or 6 year? Or lifetime?

Number of factors can cause rust around element:

1) Element is seeping moisture: check and replace element.
Elements can start leaking any time

2) Anode rod can be depleted from variety of factors including water softener or calcification over anode so it will not work: Check and replace anode rod every 1-2 years with water softener, every 3-5 without water softener. New anode rod will STOP the rust, but will not repair tank that is rusted.
Tanks with longer warranties have 2 anode rods, one on hot water nipple, the other on top of tank.

3) Stray current corrosion: add a jumper wire between hot and cold pipes, and make sure tank is grounded. If there is stray current, it will deplete steel in tank if tank is not grounded.
For example one fellow had a tank that rusted out every few years until he discovered his big radio antenna was grounded back to hot water pipe and the tank was not grounded, so the interference depleted his tank.
