Question about Compaq Cq60-410us (NW159UA) PC Notebook
Hooked up an external monitor which works. Shined a bright light onto screen and can see desktop and can access programs. Has the inverter gone bad?
Sounds like your LCD backlight unit needs to be replaced.
The part is cheap but you will need to open up the LCD screen and replace the CCFL tube

SOURCE: presario 700 very dim screen
One solution i've found for this problem is to turn down the screen brightness (funtion key, then F7) worked for me instead of replacing a very dark screen.. kept it from overheating

Yes! it is the inverter board or the backlight behind the display that is the issue.
