Question about Computers & Internet

Powers on but no video

The laptop powers on (I can hear the fan spinning), but the screen stays blank (black). Switching to external video via keyboard function key does not do anything. There are no beep sounds, so I assume the POST checks out ok.

SOURCE: Laptop not booting up

You didn't mention the model number of your notebook, but another common issue on Dell notebooks was the power connector on the back becoming loose and no longer making a solid connection to the machine (or worse, shorting out). This is a difficult fix as it requires resoldering the connection.

You would be well advised to hit F8 and do a safe mode. Then check the disk. More details here: http://annoyances-resolved.blogspot.com/2009/09/laptop-wont-boot-and-shows-blank-screen.html

SOURCE: HP2510 laptop will not boot up. The power

Make sure to remove any power source from the laptop.
The most common problem can be that you may have dislodged the RAMs. Open up your laptop till you see your RAMs, in most systems RAMs compartment can be viewed without opening the system fully. When you see the ram, very carefully remove them and clean gently with a cloth and replace them cautiously make sure you don't hurt any thing.
Plug in the power sources and turn on your computer.
If this doesn't help, comment so that I can assist you further.

Are the lights solid or blinking? Blinking lights are an indication of what the problem is.

Does it seem like it booted up all the way except the screen is blank? If so try the steps below.

Shine a flashlight on the dark screen to see if you barely see the icons on the desktop. If so, then the LCD Inverter is bad.

Plug in an external monitor and see if the display shows up on it. It can be any kind of monitor even the old big fat crt monitors as long as it has a vga cable to connect to your computer's vga port. If so that proves your video card is ok. The video will show on most systems when you reboot without you having to do anything. Some systems will require you to hit the FN (Function key) + F1 thru F12. Hold down the FN key then hit the correct key for displaying on the monitor (F1 thru F12). The correct key will normally have CRT/LCD on it or it will have the icon of a display.

If you see no icons by shinning a flash light and the external monitor works, then your screen is bad. If you see no icons by shinning the flash light and nothing shows on the external monitor, then most likely your video card is bad.

If it does not seem like it booted up all the way try the steps below:

When you powered the laptop on did anything ever post (display) on the screen during the boot process? If not your problem might be your video card inside the computer.

When you plug in the power cord is there any lights whatsoever on the laptop, where the plug goes in or on the AC Adapter of the power cord?

When you press the power button do you hear fans running, hard drive spinning, lights on the computer, hear any beeps or lights constantly blinking, hear the DvD/CD drive click and the light on the drawer of the DvD/CD turn on for a second or two? If so the laptop is trying to boot or may have booted, but the screen is not showing for some reason.

Beep tones and blinking lights tells the technicians what is going on with the laptop and why it is not booting. Most times it's a motherboard issue when you hear beeps or blinking lights continuous. Most times the problem is with the memory or Video Card. Count the Blinking Lights or Beeps and take note of their pattern (1 Long or 1 Long followed by 2 Short).

Maybe your power cord is bad if you don't get anything to happen whatsoever when you press the power button. And if that's true maybe you was operating off the battery the last time you had it on and since the power cord is bad, it was not charging the battery so the battery is drained and the power cord is bad.

Maybe you have a Static Charge Buildup. Remove the Power Cord, Remove the Battery, then Press and Hold the power button for 30 seconds. After 30 seconds plug the power cord back in (leave the battery out) and hit the power button to see if it boots. If it does, you can put the battery back in and let it charge.

Maybe your DC Power Jack which is where the power cord plugs into the computer is bad. Take an ink pen and push the tip inside the jack and see if the little pin wiggles, if so the jack is bad. You'll have to take the laptop apart to fix it. Most times it is soldered onto the motherboard, so you will have to desolder the old and solder a new one.

Maybe your memory is bad or the memory slot is bad.

Remove the Power Cord, Remove the battery, Remove the cover that houses the memory then remove one of the memory chips. Set the chip aside then try rebooting the computer. If it boots, then you know the memory chip you set aside is bad so mark an x on it with an ink pen. If it fails to boot then move the chip to the next memory slot and try rebooting. If it fails take the chip out and set it aside, then put the other chip in and try booting it in both slots. If it boots, just to verify that the chip set aside is bad, mark an x on it and put it into the open memory chip slot and try booting.

If something posts on the screen when you press the power button but it is not completing the boot cycle. Try running the check disk utility.

To run the check disk utility you will need a repair disc or a operating system disc. Put the disc in the cd drive and boot from it. You want to get to the Dos Command Prompt (Black screen with white letters) and type the following command: chkdsk /r
Check disk will run well over an hour or two and you will notice the percentages going from high to low, this is normal. Let it run to completion. Then reboot machine.

If check disk fails to solve your problem you might have to reinstall windows. Try doing a Repair Install that way you don't loose your data, documents, music, pictures, videos or programs.

In windows xp you get to the dos command prompt by selecting R for repair when the options appear.

In Vista and Windows 7 you want to get to the recovery console and look down at the bottom of the window for the Dos Command.

Computer screen on Toshiba Satellite L745-S4110 worked yesterday. Will not come on, stays black with computer on. What could I have touched to make screen stay black?

There *could* be a video switching setup (usually FN and f8) that allows you to switch from LCD to External and "projector" modes. If these are not in the correct selection, your LCD will be blank because the pc thinks youre watching external vga connection. But it could also just be a bad connection to the lcd panel from the main unit

My Apple screen stays black!!!!!

If you hear the fan spinning and the screen stays blank chances are very good that the video chip on your logic board has failed. That was a common issue with many Apple laptops of that generation.
Before you give up on it however try resetting the power manager and reseating the RAM. Below is a link to instructions on how to reset the power manager on a powerbook.

Dell inspiron 6400 start up problem.

Can you hear the hard drive spinning and the computer appears to be running but you you get a blank screen. If you look at the LCD screen at an acute angle and you see a dim image. then you have a backlight problem. To determine if you have a video card problem or a lcd screen problem, Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first and then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight.
Get back to me with the results of these tests and any error messages etc. so I can advise you.

External montior is blank

Are you sure the laptop is powering up?
Do you hear the laptop boot up and the hard drive spinning and the power LED is on when you connected the external monitor?
The monitor must be powered up before the laptop for the video info to switch video port automatically.
If the external monitor is blank then you can't make it work, your video card is faulty and it is not possible to replace as it is built-in on the motherboard. You could replace the motherboard but this may not be a cost effective solution,

Did you switch displays to the external video? Try hitting the Fn key and whichever function key at the top of the keyboard has a little TV screen icon over it at the same time.
