97 jimmy wont go back to 2 wheel drive

Check everything in that right front driveline. Could have a problem that when the four wheel drive puts some tension on it, it stops making noise.

I got a 1997 gmc jimmy 4wd my 4wd doesnt engage the front diff but it engages the ****** for low range ive checked my actuator pump and its moving but now i have a rattling noise in my front drivers side...

It would appear you have a failed CV shaft on your drivers side front. If the axle is jumping around, that means the 4wd is engaged, but the front wheels can't pull because the one axle is just freewheeling. Replace that left axle and you should be good to go. Might want to check the cv boots on the right side axle while you are there.

1998 gmc jimmy you here the 4x4 ingage but the front wheels want pull

Hello Bj.

This is a common issue with the Jimmy's in that year.
Because you can hear the shift motor it likely works.
The problem is likely at the front differential. There is a vacuum actuator that has a cable that pulls on a lever which engages a clutch inside the differential tube.

This vacuum originates at the engine, goes to the transfer case. On the transfer case the is a vacuum switch which then directs the vacuum to the vacuum motor when 4x4 is called for.
You will need to check for vacuum at this motor which is located on the right front engine compartment down low. Tricky to get to but not impossible. Follow the cable from the right side of the differential if you can't locate it.

If no vacuum, trace it back to the leak. If no leak, the vacuum switch on the transfer case may be bad.
If vacuum is there, which I suspect it is, replace the vacuum motor and cable assembly.
There you are, if you have further questions, please ask me here.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Where can I locate the spark plugs on a 1998 jimmy? what do I need to get apart to change them?

The best way to access spark plugs on these vehicles is jacking up the front end and removing the front tires access thru the wheel openings with a rachet, long extension and aswivel style 5/8 spark plug socket.

98 gmc jimmy makes a rattling/clunking noise on right front side. Sounds like its coming from tire but checked brakes, rim, lug nuts, and such but found nothing. It does it on and off but mostly on and...

If the noise gets louder around corners while the 4WD is being used the Constant Velocity Universal joint is worn out, if not the truck probably needs stabilizer link rods they are fairly inexpensive but the CVU joints are not.
