Question about Creative Labs HS-400 Headset
Is it possible that you guys are both using it on a laptop with a built in mic? If so, then the laptop's mic is probably the one that is receiving sounds instead of your headset. Set your headset as the default mic.

I'm not 100% sure it's the microphone in your case, since I am experiencing the same problem right now with another microphone. I borrowed a working headset from my friend and it is not working either. My volume is up like yours and I can barely hear myself. I am updating the drivers soon and I'll let you know if that fixes it.
