How do I do a factory reset from safe mode with command prompt? windows xp

Restoring Windows XP operating system can be performed in DOS mode if XP's system restore tool cannot be accessed because of booting issues or when the XP recovery CDs are unavailable. There are two steps to this procedure: first, the XP system restore tool must be accessed using the DOS menu and second, the actual XP system restore is performed.

Start the computer and press the F8 key when the manufacturer's logo appears but before the Windows XP logo appears. Scroll through the menu options using the down arrow key. Select "Safe mode with a Command prompt" and hit the Enter key. Type in the administrator ID and password. Hit "Enter." Type in this code in the command prompt box to access the XP system restore tool: %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe. Hit "Enter." The XP system restore tool will open. b> How to Restore Windows XP b> Click "Restore my Computer to an Earlier Time" when the XP system restore tool starts. Click "Next." Choose a restore point before your operating system began to malfunction. Click "Next" and "OK." Click "Next" to begin the XP restoration process. Do not turn off the computer or attempt to stop the system restore tool, as this may damage the hard drive. The system restore tool will automatically restart the computer when it has finished restoring the operating system. Hope this helps.

My lap top freezes every time I try to log in

In order to help you I need you to answer a couple questions first.
1. Which Operating System are you running? (Window or OS X) 2. Before this started happening did you install anything new or click on something, by mistake, that you may not have known what it was?

If it is windows, try going in to safe mode. You can do this by pressing F8 at the top of the keyboard multiple time when the computer turns on, keep pushing F8 till you get a menu in which you see the option for safe mode. If you are able to load that then windows is ok, it is something installed (incompatible software or malware). Once in safe mode go to the start button, either search for system restore or go to programs-> accessories ->system tools ->system restore and try to restore to a time before this problem began to happen.
Hope this helps.

I have the windows xp home edition discs that a friend handed to me to fix my computer. but do not know where the product key is and he is away for quite a while and not reachable for me to even figure out...

Iff you have a desk top the product key should be stuck some where on the side covers or back of the case . if you have a Lap top it should be underneath the laptop .

I hope this helps.

No sound please help inspiron lap top not

Did you ever have sound. If you did, depending on the version of windows use the system restore feature. Windows XP can go back months, while Vista can only about a month when you show restore points older than 5 days. Just search for the system restore feature for your operating system. Use the help menu to locate the program (In vista it will be named differently but the help menu will show you where it is).
