Philips MMS 460 Computer subwoofer problem

Every couple of minutes my subwoofer makes a very short and loud thump. which is really pissing me off!! I had a feeling it might have been interference so i moved the cables etc but it's still happening. any clues as to what it might be? Cheers, Azz

the subwoofer started making a loud buzzing sound that just doesn't quit! it cuts on and off, then continues buzzing.....

Yes I had the same problem a few months back. Eventually the sub packed up all together together with the centre speaker. I've still got them if anyone's got a magic solution.

    Cheers.

i have the same problem & i just bought the system about two months ago with a macbook from Fry's electronics in houston,tx. the subwoofer also sounds like i playin a raincloud soundtrack. the philips website could not find the product upon search. i think us should initiate a global Philips boycott till they disapear and there crappy products will go away-thats my solution

    My subwoofer

Similar problem. (Speakers stopped functioning.) Opened up the sub housing and unmounted the PCB. The L7812CV 12V /18W regulator was toast. Unmounted it and hard wired my bench regulator (Noisy but all I had) to the output port. Surround speakers work great but the sub is only paying amplified noise. Does anyone have a schematic for this layout? I think the one of the other ICs may be damaged too.

Found it.....

Replaced the 1.5Amp 12v Reg with a 3Amp 12v and heatsink...also replace all the electrolitics in the same area. Reasoning being gone leaky due to hot heasink.

Remember to Silicon the heatsink down afterwards as it rattles if you dont!!!!

    Replaced the 1.5 Amp 12v Reg with a 3Amp 12v and heatsink...

    >>> These are DC Regulators on the main PCB found in the big Sub Woofer Box. All you are doing is uping the spec to a better device...

also replace all the electrolitics in the same area. Reasoning being gone leaky due to hot heasink.

    >>> Electolitic capacitors go dry (leaky) if exposed to heat for a long time...Just replace them, again with better spec (105c working temps are good)

Remember to Silicon the heatsink down afterwards as it rattles if you dont!!!!

    >>> Do I have to explain why a heatsink rattles???

    Hope this helps..

If can't stop zzzzz voice, you can also change 12v regulator. You can see it at the picture.

That is an awful lot of trouble, where is the amp, in the power converter?

You can go ahead and use your own laptop charger (or of a friend) as an input for the MMS 460, if it's about equivalent to 18v,2.5a output.
If that solves your issue, then get a new power supply.
