Hi, Only two things you can try: 1. Use a CD cleaner. Hopefully it's just a speck of dust covering the lens making it unable to read discs; 2. If that doesn't work, your best bet perhaps is to return the unit. Trying to open the DVD unit of the laptop will void any warranty you may have. Hope this be of some help/idea. post back how things turned up or should you need further information. Good luck and kind regards.

My hp pavilion zd8000 laptop with XP installed will not allow me to load a golf game from a CD Rom I purchased some 14 years ago. I used to have this installed a nd played regularly on a previous computer.

The game may be not supported with the current Operating System Perhaps!!! What was your old computer's Operating system? And since the CD-ROM is 14 years old does it has too many scratch?? These days computer CD/DVD drives will never read the disc if they are scratched...

Finally, when you try installing the game, do you encounter any error message? if yes please post it....always remember if your posting your problem in forum, make sure that you provide all information about the issue.

Boot Disc's Not reading, Dvd rom help? or Xp/vista help?

How did you made it boot to the disc? if you used keystrokes to do so, it would be better if you go into your BIOS and set the boot priority making the dvd drive as priority and see if it is gonna work that way. If it does'nt you need to be concerned about the drive itself, it might be having problems as well.

Dvd rom not reading discs

did you clean the optical lens? if you do so, then you've got same problem,my suggestion is, you just purchase a new dvd rom drive, because your dvd has optical lens problem. it happened to me a long time ago with my client, what i did i open the laptop then i changed it with a brand new dvd rom drive. If you are going to repair that dvd it is not advisable, it might be back when the same problem.

Dell Cd/Dvd burner not working properly

I have a Dell XPS 400 that's about 3 years old. I have a DVD reader and a DVD-RW device. The former works - the latter takes forever to read discs (particularly DVD data discs.)

I'm starting to think some of the generic DVD-RW devices Dell uses in its computers are prone to early failure. The DVD-RW in my XPS-400 was called "HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-H21N".

I'm going to try cleaning it, and then just swap it out for a better device.
