Intermimment motion of my washing machine.

When I place my washing machine on any cycle it fills the water, heats as needed but without me shaking the machine it usually will not start to rotate. It will then continue properly to the end of a cycle (about 2 thirds of the time), draining, filling and rotating and even spinning. It may do a second load if I'm lucky, but I usually have to shake it again. Any suggestions? I have a hoover washer/dryer nextra
