The "spring" thermostat is a special spring, its made of special wire and set at a specific spring rate... if its damaged, over heated. by the muffler, etc.. replace it...

Well I have looked at my suppliers and they are showing it no longer available. So you may have to search around and find an old murray mower that no one is going to fix but has a good deck. good luck.

Briggs made primers with and without holes in them. In my shop it is common to see them transposed on engines.
Take down the MODEL TYPE CODE numbers and check here to see if yours should have the primer with or without the hole in it.

Click the Parts Lookup box in the center of that page.
Next, drop down the menu on the left to Briggs & Stratton. Set the tab at the top to MODEL.
Next, type in the model number and click search.
From the results page, select your exact type number. Your individual parts views will then be listed on the right side of the page. You'll get the idea!

It could be the govenor spring. Get the model number, type and code and take it to a small engine parts store and get a new one. A new spring will slow down the rpm's and it wont be that loud. Make sure you remember how the spring was hooked up.

You first need to locate the model number on the mower, not the Briggs engine. Then go to searspartsdirect.com and enter your model number on the right side of the web page. This will take you to a list of parts for your mower. Your model number should be located on the deck of the mower (you didn't say if it was a rider or a push). Rider model numbers are located on the rear of the body behind, on or under the seat. Push model numbers are found on the back of the deck between where the handles attach to the frame.

I recommend  Jack's Small Engine Repair; they have always had the detail part I needed and their prices are among the lowest.
They will probably have an illustrated parts page for your model.
