Question about Sony KP-61HS10 61" Rear Projection Television

Sony KP61HS10 61 in - out of focus when first turned on

I recently paid $500 to a local TV technician. He did not fix the problem. I found him in the yellow pages and he was not professional at all. When I turn on the TV it is blurry for about 5 mins with a red outline (shadow). After it warms up it works perfectly! I don't want to pay someone again. This guy was a crook and said he would have to charge me $500 again. I can buy a new TV for what he is charging and frankly I don't think he knows what he is doing. Does anyone have any advise on how I can fix it. He used the remote to align the colors on the TV, but I have no idea what codes/numbers he typed in on the remote control. Thanks!!

Re: Sony KP61HS10 61 in - out of focus when first turned...

He probably went into the Service Menu by Pressing Display,5,Vol+,Power buttons and adjusted the red convergence and that may have lasted alittle while, but the problem seem to be going blurry and then when warming up comes back ok. This indicates a Leaky Capacitor. My question would be is it only Red that is Blurry or is it all colors. It could also be a CRT problem. Could you take a picture of it when it's doing it?

We recently moved the tv and now when we turn it on it has double vision. It kinda looks like a 3d movie. What could be the issue? Is it worth fixing?

If tv picture was fine before moved then check dry/ cold solder joints/ connections on convergence output ICs and nearby circuit area.
Local tv repairman will resolder loose/ dry solder connections to solve double vision picture problem.
TV worth fixing if picture is good.

I have recently moved my Sony 57" projection tv and the image is now blurry. I have tried adjusting the convergence manually but I'm no longer able to line up the crosses.

Adjust focus block, then adjust each of 3 lenses. loosen w/ thumbscrew, then turn cylinder to focus onto screen. Focus each by covering the others w/ typing paper, then tighten.

I have a sony kp 48s and there seems to be a blue shadow on the picture?? i've tried everything in the settings to fix it but it just seems like a manufacture malfunction?

You probably need to get a Sony TV Convergence Kit. More information can be found using the link below.

Convergence Symptoms:
  • Screen Looks Distorted/3D
  • Colors wont align
  • Screen may look distorted
  • No Audio/Video - makes a chirping sound.
You can see some examples and find a fix here...

Sony HDTV cabinet not level when installed on stand.

Did you resolve this problem? I just received my kdl52xbr9 with the same problem. I called Sony customer service as soon as I found out this problem. A technician from the local Sony Service Center will take a look at it in a couple of days.

Green Shadow

Sounds like your green panel is out of alignment. Has the TV been moved or jarred recently?

Generally speaking rear-projection panel alignments need to be done internally by professionals. Check for a local TV technician that specializes in projection TVs.

No picture blinking stand by light

I hve worked on a number of these units , your description is typical of a shorted blue picture tube. The protection circuits in the tv detect that there is a problem thus shutting the unit down to prevent further damage. Sony had a bad run of picture tubes in this series. The replacement cost of the tube is about $250 plus labor. My estimate would be for the repair about $400-500 depending on where you live and how honest your local technican is. I will caution you however, that you could replace this tube and the red or green could go. These would not be covered by the technicians warranty. When these sets are working, they have a superb picture and it is easy to get lured into fixing them. Scrivitron

Faint blue arched line across picture

I had the same problem with my sony KP-57ws500 rear projection tv. To solve this problem all you need is a flat and phillips screwdriver. Right below your speakers on the right and left side are tabs. Pull out the tabs and remove the screw on eachside. Once that is done remove the speaker cover and you will see a fiber board cover in the middle of the tv, there will most likley be twist ties holding some wires, to make it easier to work remove the ties. Now remove the screws on the fiber board and pull it off. You should see 3 adjustments on the top for focus, do not touch those. Below the focus adjustments on the bottom is the blue, red, and green adjustments (they should be labled). All you have to do is turn adjustment screw slightly to the left(or counter clockwise) and it should clear right up. I'm not a technician but i read up on it in a repair manual and it worked perfectly and saved me a $100.00 for a service call. It took about 10 minutes to do. I also have a friend who expiernced the same problem with a different model sony projection tv and it worked for his also. Apparently this is a common adjustment that needs to be made espicially if the tv is moved.
