Question about Sony KP-61HS10 61" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Sony KP61HS10 61 in - out of focus when first turned on

I recently paid $500 to a local TV technician. He did not fix the problem. I found him in the yellow pages and he was not professional at all. When I turn on the TV it is blurry for about 5 mins with a red outline (shadow). After it warms up it works perfectly! I don't want to pay someone again. This guy was a crook and said he would have to charge me $500 again. I can buy a new TV for what he is charging and frankly I don't think he knows what he is doing. Does anyone have any advise on how I can fix it. He used the remote to align the colors on the TV, but I have no idea what codes/numbers he typed in on the remote control. Thanks!!

I will take a picture in the morning. I think it's just red. I'll take a pic in the morning and email it to you. Thanks so much for your help! I'm in Florida, so I'll post the image when I get up.

    Have a great night!!

Taking a picture doesn't show it. I'll try again later to capture it.

Here's another clue (possibly) if I hit Auto Focus when the TV first comes on it corrects itself, but only until the TV is turned off. The best picture quality occurs when I don't hit auto focus and wait about 5 mins, so it corrects on it's own.

What were those codes again? I tried on my remote, but the alignment grid didn't come up??

Thanks Troy. If I can get to that grid screen I think I can fix the problem. It's a white grid that you can position. Do you know of it? I must be hitting the wrong buttoms because I can't get to it.

This guy was so dense he forgot his glasses and didn't even screw the backboard on the TV........(sigh)

He probably went into the Service Menu by Pressing Display,5,Vol+,Power buttons and adjusted the red convergence and that may have lasted alittle while, but the problem seem to be going blurry and then when warming up comes back ok. This indicates a Leaky Capacitor. My question would be is it only Red that is Blurry or is it all colors. It could also be a CRT problem. Could you take a picture of it when it's doing it?

In order for any auto focus, magic focus to work properly you have to let the set warm up. Atleast 20min or more. Then try it!

Wow sounds like he was trying to get away fast!LOL. if you go into service mode press eject-rewind-play

I have recently moved my Sony 57" projection tv and the image is now blurry. I have tried adjusting the convergence manually but I'm no longer able to line up the crosses.

Adjust focus block, then adjust each of 3 lenses. loosen w/ thumbscrew, then turn cylinder to focus onto screen. Focus each by covering the others w/ typing paper, then tighten.

Sony KDL-40V3000 standby blinks 13 times.

A service technician arrived at my home this morning and infromed me that 13 blinks indicates a bad LCD panel. His quote to repair it was approximately $500 more than the TV initially cost. I contacted Sony support directly, and they have agreed to replace the TV, since it is less than 30 days out of warranty. The KDL40V3000 has apparently been dicontinued so they are replacing with a KDL40V4100(factory reconditioned). I know this won't necessarily help others with the same problem, but if your warranty ended recently enough they will probably work with you to mitigate the expense.

About 5 years ago, I was servicing many of these sets under a warranty service contract. This series of set is fairly complex to work on. It takes a very experienced tech who knows this model series very well to work on these.

After 4 to 5 years it is very possible that the picture tube (CRT) may be weak, and there can be fault conditons in the power supply and scan circuits. Most of the time, these sets are not feasable to service when out of warranty and there are major component failures. Considering that it is a CRT set proprietary replacement parts are not usually available from the manufactures. CRT sets are no longer being produced.

Technicaly, if you want to pay the cost and if the proprietary type replacement parts can be found, your set can be serviced by an experienced Sony service technician. When your set was in production a new factory replacement CRT alone was in the price range of $1200. This does not include the 3 to 4 hours of labour to replace it. If the flyback and horizontal output transistor has to be replaced along with a number of capacitors, you can add on at least another $300 to $500 minimum. Out of the shop a CRT job with a repair can cost about 1/2 the price of its new value!

For much less than what you say you paid for your set, you can get a new LCD or Plasma HDTV for about 1/2 of what you paid. Believe me, if you go for a high end Plasma or Sony set of today it will outperform your CRT set.
