My DVD/CD drive only plays Cds. Device manager tells me it is fine. Can you give me any of ideas of what to try? thanks for the help! Halyna
Also try to reinstall the software for the CD/DVD drive...
If the installer won't read the CD/DVD from the drive then try to download from - tinyurl.com/2rbdh6.
Also try to delete the upper and lower filters from the registries...
Start>run> regedit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\....click on the +
SYSTEM\....click on the +
CurrentControlSet\....click on the +
Control\Class\....click on the +
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} ....click on the folder
Then look for the upper and lower filters on the right side. Once you find it, right click then delete.
If it won't work then try to start up the computer using the windows cd and try to reinstall OS.
If it still won't work after reinstalling the windows, go ahead and replace the CD/DVD drive.
You will need to replace the cd/dvd rom as the dvd laser will have worn out. go here : http://www.pchub.com/uph/
To order an original replacement.

I have the same problem. I can play CDs but DVDs or new versions of software are not recognized.
My player WAS worn out. It was not old enough to be worn out, but this was the problem. I thought the DVDs were faulty but they played on other equipment. Thanks for the common sense!
