Both sides running but not cooling. shut down remover back cover from inside freezer section and found coils iced up. freezer is a auto defrost.
shutdown and thawed freezer and restarted, seems to be fine been 2 days so far. will this happen again. does anyone know why this happens. it happened a few months ago and I did the same thing then.
maybe the doors where left open or my wife moved the settingd up more than 1 setting.

    Thanks,

Will a partially opened door contibute to the problem? About a half inch open overnight.

  • Anonymous May 04, 2009

I was on the fridge side that was open for a while.

I thawed it out aweek ago then noticed something on top of fridge keeping the door from closing all the way. then the same problem came back with coils frozen up, thanks..

One thing i am now noticing is that the frige does shutdown after running for a few hours.

Maytag SBS Refrig, unit runs, fan runs, but freezer only gets down to 20 and the frig only gets down to 60. Manually de-iced the coils about 2 months ago when I had the same problem. I suspect the coils are iced up again. I don't think it is an air infiltration problem because both doors seal well and we pay particular attention to this detail after the 1st time is happened. I now suspect the heater may be bad or the circuitry associated with it. Any ideas?

    What else could be wrong?

What parts are connected to the heater?

Are these easily replacable without major surgery?

Not cooling

Roy,
Are the evaporator coils in the freezer frozen up?
The evaporator is located behind the cover in the back of the freezer.
If so this may be a defrost issue.
The adaptive defrost timer may have failed.
This is located in the ref. side inside the front control pannel.

If not then you may have a freon leak.
This would have to be repaired by a qualified technician.

Maytag side by side fridge freezer leaking water

Your drain plug within the evap area of the freezer is frozen, turn frig off, let sit for day or two with doors open. Once all ice has melted then take rear freezer evap cover off and pour water into try and make sure it drains, if not then unplug drain. This is usually caused by a defrost heater bad or unit not going into defrost when it's supposed to, may be main board.

I have an admiral model HMG 67184 side by side and I can't figure out why my freezer section still works but doesn't get cold enough to make ice cubes and the other side doesn't work at all. I do have...

1. Get the Food out of the Ref and Freezer. Unplug the power cord from the wall.
2. The cooling coil is in the back wall of the freezer side. Working from inside the Freezer.
3. Remove the back plastic cover to expose the cooling coil. It's called the Evaporator coil.
4. Use a hair dryer to melt all ice off the coil.
5. Put it back together. It should work for 3 - 5 days now at least.
6. Put a thermometer in there. After 24 hrs. the freezer should be 0 to 10 degrees F. and the Ref. side 37 to 44 degree F.
7. Check the door gaskets for tight fit, using a dollar bill for a gauge.
Shut the door on the dollar and try to pull it out in several places.

If it ices up again in a week or two, you have a defrost heater problem. There is a electric heat strip around the cooling coil. This heat strip comes on about 10 minutes every 8 or 10 hours. This heater melts the ice off the coil. There is a clock timer device under the ref. that cycles the heat strip. You may have a bad clock, fuse device or burned out defrost heater strip. The cooling coil must be ice free to work properly.

I have a maytag MSD2754GR, the freezer bottom is all iced

The drian hole has become stopped up and ice has accumulated in the the drian hole. You will need to unplug the fridge and remove the cover on the back (located at the bottom, 6 screws). On the freezer side there is a drian hole with a rubber 90 and a clear line that runs to the drain pan. Remove line and unstop. Don't not put the line back on yet.

Now for the fun part, remove the basket and the two bottom shelves from the freezer. Half way up the back there are 2 screws that need to be removed. After removing screws pull up on the top cover to so you can remove the bottom cover. The bottom cover maybe froze to the coils and to the inside drain pan. Break the ice with a butter knife, and remove cover ( do not hit the coils). Now you need to break the ice that is froze to the the pan and under it. Once you have remove all the ice you will see the drain hole, use a small pointed object to break ice that is in drain hole. Now you can put the drain line back on and make sure that the other end is in the drain pan under the fridge. Now reassemble the fridge and plug it back up.

It took me about 20 minutes to do this.

Hope this helps.

Maytag wide by side not cooling. just prior to this frost build up on top of freezer. Compressor not running.

Check to see if you have frost on the back panel of your freezer in your fridge. If you do your coil is frozen over and you'll have to defrost your freezer. I just did mine cause mine wasn't cooling properly on my fridge side. My coil was solid ice.

Fridge is not cold enough, freezer is working fine, but has frost

Just had the same problem with my side-by-side.

In my case, the solution was to empty the freezer side, to access a back panel INSIDE the freezer covering the fan and cooling coils. Two screws held the back panel cover on, and when I removed the panel cover I found the cooling coils to be totally iced up, preventing the flow of cold air into the fridge side. I left the freezer open for a few hours until all the ice was melted, before replacing the inside panel. (I used a blow dryer to help speed up the ice melting).

Everything's working fine now for me - good luck with yours!
