Make sure you routed it correctly. One of the most common mistakes I make is trying to put belt around a tensioner that belt just rides on. Hope that helps.

How do I lossen the belt tensioner on a 1991 toyota cressida I lossend the adjusting bolt and it didn't move

I can't give you the exact answer but there is generally at least two bolts and sometimes more to deal with when a belt is manually tensioned depending whether adjustment is by means of a movable jockey wheel or the alternator or power steering pump must be moved.

In the case of a movable jockey wheel or pulley, generally the centre retaining nut or bolt must also be loosened in order to allow it to be pulled along the track by the adjusting bolt. Sometimes a cap must be prised from the pulley to expose the bolt.

If the alternator or pas pump must be moved, usually the retaining bolts and sometimes the brace bolt must be slackened before adjustment is made.

Is there a trick to loosening the power steering pump pulley to remove the belt? Thanks!

Loosen the pivot bolt. Most have an adjusting bolt and a pivot bolt where the PS pump can move back and forth a bit.

I NEED A DIAGRAM ON HOW TO INSTALL A NEW ALTERNATOR BELT ON A 1982 TOYOTA CELICA GT WITH A/C.

Hi, it appears there are other belts in front of the alternator belt. In this case, the other belts have to come off first. There are adjusting mechanisms on each the air pump, compressor, and alternator to loosen and tighten the belts. The power steering belt is adjusted by sliding the idler pulley. Please follow the instructions below and let me know if you have any questions.

Alternator

To adjust the tension of the alternator drive belt on all models, loosen the pivot and mounting bolts on the alternator. Using a wooden hammer handle, a broomstick or your hand, move the alternator one way or the other until the proper tension is achieved.

WARNING Do not use a screwdriver or any other metal device (such as a prybar) as a lever.
Tighten the mounting bolts securely. If a new belt has been installed, recheck the tension after about 200 miles (480 km) of driving.

Air Conditioning Compressor

A/C compressor belt tension can be adjusted by turning the tension adjusting bolt which is located on the compressor tensioner bracket. Turn the bolt clockwise to tighten the belt and counterclockwise to loosen it.

Air Pump

See Figures 12
To adjust the tension of the air pump drive belt, loosen the adjusting lever bolt and the pivot bolt. Move the pump in or out until the desired tension is felt.
The tension should be checked between the air pump and the crankshaft pulley on cars without air conditioning. On cars with A/C, the tension should be checked between the A/C compressor and the crankshaft pulley.

Power Steering Pump

Tension on the power steering belt is adjusted by means of an idler pulley. Turn the adjusting bolt on the idler pulley until the desired tension is felt and then retighten the lockbolt.

I'm trying to change the belts for my 92 tercel but some how cant find the tension pulley. Can anyone please help me. I need to change both belts.

It appears that your car is equipped with multiple v-belts, rather than a serpentine belt so there most likely aren't tensioner pullies. Here is some general info that may help.

Alternator To adjust the tension of the alternator drive belt on older models, loosen the pivot and mounting bolts on the alternator. Using a wooden hammer handle, or a broomstick as a prying device, move the alternator one way or the other until the proper tension is achieved. Do not use a screwdriver or any other metal device such as a pry bar, as a lever. Newer models use a tension adjusting bolt. Loosen the pivot bolt and the locking bolt, then turn the tension adjusting bolt until proper tension is achieved. Tighten the bolts securely, run the engine about minute, stop the engine then recheck the belt tension. Air Conditioning Compressor A/C compressor (always use caution when working near the A/C compressor to avoid damaging the refrigerant lines) belt tension can be adjusted by turning the tension adjusting bolt which is located on the compressor tensioner bracket. Turn the bolt clockwise to tighten the belt and counterclockwise to loosen it. Air Pump To adjust the tension of the air pump drive belt, loosen the adjusting lever bolt and the pivot bolt. Move the pump in or out until the desired tension is reached. NOTE: The tension should be checked between the air pump and the crankshaft pulley on cars without air conditioning. On cars with A/C the tension should be checked between the compressor and the crankshaft pulley. Power Steering Pump Tension on the power steering belt is adjusted by means of an idler pulley (some models may use just a lower adjusting bracket setup, similar to the alternator adjustment service procedure). Loosen the lock bolt and turn the adjusting bolt on the idler pulley until the desired tension is felt, then tighten the lock bolt.

I am trying to replace the belts on my 93 Toyota Tercel and I am unable to remove the tension on the air pump/airconditioning so that I could replace the belt.

To remove the belt on the alternator side, loosen the the 14 mm nut and bolt that pivots the alternator and loosen the the 12 mm bolt that allows you to slide the alternator loose. The other belt that connects the power steering and the air condition compressor is a little trickier. You must loosen the the 14 mm nut that pivots the power steering but do not remove the nut completely. There are two other nuts, one 13 mm that can be reached below the vehicle looking upward that must be loosen. This creates the tension needed to release the belt. The last 14mm nut is located on a plate afixed to the side of the engine that is slotted. A special swivel type 14mm wrench is needed becuase there is not much room to work with. Once this is loose you will be able to loosen the belt to be able to take the belt off. If you can not take off this nut, your only recourse is to pry off the old belt with a screw driven and place the new belt in by hand by using the pulleys and rotate the belt manually on. This takes patience ans muscle. Once the belts are in place nmake sure to tighten the nuts and bolts to attain between 1/4" to 3/8" deflection arounf the center of the belts between the pulleys.
