Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 200 GB... Problem

I recently purchased a new external hard drive and connected it up to my home network. It is connected to my desk top via USB connection. It works fine on the desk top, I have three laptops that share my home network and they can all see the Icon for the external hard drive. However when they click to connect a window pops up saying, "you might not have permission to use this network resource see your administrator" and below that it says "Not enough server storage is available to process this command". This happens on all three laptops.I have tried all of Microsoft suggestions changing the reg edits etc. but no luck. All running Win XP home Edt.

Its going to be a hardware thing. Is the drive connected to a UB2 port? The network itself has its own data transfer rate  ( ie. gigabit ) you need to make sure you cables are no longer than 6 ft, its plugged into a high speed port, and that all ports on the chain are of the same speed. If you have the option, go firewire for this. If that does not rectify it, check adminsitrator properties of the drive.

Try a different "data" cable between your computer and the external disk-drive.

If there is an external power-supply, borrow a "multimeter", and test that the power-supply is supplying power (correct voltage and correct amperage).

Try connecting it to another computer.

Disassemble it, and disconnect the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter. Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, and see if the disk is working.

If it still is under warranty, either your local retail store, or Maxtor/Seagate will honour the warranty, and replace it.

Maxtor personal storage 3200 - flashing green light.

First, disconnect the power cable from the back of the external hard drive:
If the power supply LED continues to blink:
  1. Connect the power supply to a different outlet (or instead of connecting to a power strip, connect directly to an outlet in the wall).

  2. If the power supply continues to blink after changing outlets, this indicates that the power supply is defective and needs to be replaced.

  3. If the power supply stays solid, then reconnect to the external hard drive and see if the drive spins.
