I have a Generic External CD Rom Drive for my Gateway mt6711 laptop and Vista says it a unknown device and will not recognize it. I don't know the manufacturer's name as it is a generic external cd rom player I purchased from ebay. Any idea what I can do to fix this?
Can you boot from this external drive maybe you need to set some bios options.

- Well this you have to change some settings in the bios.
Not all laptops have this older wants do not.
Check also if the cdrom works on an other system.

The Toshiba Tecra A8 S8413 laptop cmos battery (or capacitor?) does not seem to be working. Symptoms: I set the date and time. As long as the laptop does not sleep or go into power save mode the clock keeps time. If any powersave feature starts up the clock loses time or shut down. The laptop spends more than half of its time attached to a docking station. A replacement motherboard was guoted at $400+. How difficult would a DIY fix be?
