Question about Linksys 5-Port Ethernet Switch (SD205-UK)

1 Answer

LAN Switch Ports

I have been having trouble getting on simple LANs using available switch ports...i have a standard toshiba satellite laptop, with an ethernet port...set to dhcp...should be as simple as plugging into an available linksys or netgear switch port and i should be on the LAN...i can jack into an available router port but not into the available switch ports...this has happened at 3 - 4 locations over the last 4 weeks...with dlink routers; linksys routers;netgear and linksys switch combinations but the symptoms seem to be the same...if these were configured in a similar way it would appear they have locked those ports down by only allowing valid MAC addresses...but that would not explain why i was able to get onto the available router port?...also i have tried a different laptop same config as mine but different mac address..same problem

Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER. type 'nbtstat -n' at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.
NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NetBT) resolves NetBIOS names to IP addresses. TCP/IP provides many options for NetBIOS name resolution, including local cache lookup, WINS server query, broadcast, DNS server query, and LMHOSTS and HOSTS lookup.
Nbtstat.exe is a useful tool for troubleshooting NetBIOS name resolution problems. You can use the nbtstat.exe command to remove or correct preloaded entries. To use the nbtstat.exe command: ? To list the NetBIOS table of the local computer, type nbtstat -n at the command prompt, and then press ENTER. This command displays the names that were registered locally on the computer by programs such as the server and redirector.
? To list the contents of the NetBIOS name cache, type nbtstat -c at the command prompt, and then press ENTER. This command shows the NetBIOS name cache, which contains name-to-address mappings for other computers.
? To purge the name cache and reload it from the LMHOSTS file, type nbtstat -R at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.
? To perform a NetBIOS adapter status command against the computer that you specify by name, type nbtstat -a NetBIOS computer name at the command prompt, and then press ENTER. The adapter status command returns the local NetBIOS name table for that computer and the MAC address of the network adapter.
? To display a list of client and server connections, type nbtstat -s at the command prompt, and then press ENTER. This command lists the current NetBIOS sessions and their status, including statistics, as shown in the following example:

I'd start by resetting the switch to defaults with the command
  • erase startup-config
  • The restart the switch with reload
  • Once rebooted enter conf conf t
  • Then simply configure all the ports at once
  • int ra fa0/1 - 24 if they are gig ports then it would be int ra gi0/1 - 24
  • Then type no shut
  • That should be all you need.

If you still have warranty, take it back asp, they will have to repair or replace since this was manufacture defect, if that is not an option! Do a complete recovery on your operational system to factory setting.

there are some options here.. however they are limited to what ports are available on your computer AND on your tv.. for instance..

1 s-video, this is a round like ps/2 port thatt he computer and your tv have to have for video.

2 you can use a vga port from the laptop onto the tv for video

3 you can get a switch box that will be VGA from the laptop to VGA on the switch box that will use AV cables to the tv like a dvd player, and you'll just hook your computers headphone jack intot he jack on the converter box for sound through the tv.

Toshiba A45-S1202 The rear USB port does work, but the side USB ports by the upper left corner by the LAN port don't work. I did a BIOS FLASH, still nothing! Is this a DUMMY USB? No power to the upper left...

There are no dummy ports on laptops....could be a cold solder point on the motherboard connections or a wire connection is loose. There is also the possibility that the usb controller for that port has failed. Below is the link to the service and repair manual for that laptop......

Compatibility Issue with HDMI Switch?

anytime your talking about a switch your talking about a temporary connection. The issue with using a switch is that for HDMI you want best quality and you will not get that using a temporary connection. The unit may be recognizing a weaker signal and turning the port off. However since the output on that particular unit is 1080i you should be fine using composite, just get a nicer monster set.
