Question about Linksys 5-Port Ethernet Switch (SD205-UK)

1 Answer

LAN Switch Ports

I have been having trouble getting on simple LANs using available switch ports...i have a standard toshiba satellite laptop, with an ethernet port...set to dhcp...should be as simple as plugging into an available linksys or netgear switch port and i should be on the LAN...i can jack into an available router port but not into the available switch ports...this has happened at 3 - 4 locations over the last 4 weeks...with dlink routers; linksys routers;netgear and linksys switch combinations but the symptoms seem to be the same...if these were configured in a similar way it would appear they have locked those ports down by only allowing valid MAC addresses...but that would not explain why i was able to get onto the available router port?...also i have tried a different laptop same config as mine but different mac address..same problem

I'd start by resetting the switch to defaults with the command
  • erase startup-config
  • The restart the switch with reload
  • Once rebooted enter conf conf t
  • Then simply configure all the ports at once
  • int ra fa0/1 - 24 if they are gig ports then it would be int ra gi0/1 - 24
  • Then type no shut
  • That should be all you need.

Need driver and firmware for LinkSys RTP 300, or how to set it up for simple home network with interneton the PC and laptop as the 2nd computer.

No drivers are required since there is no actual installation to to the computer. Connect the ISP modem to to the main LAN network port. Then use any available port to access network. 1.Power 2.Main drop. 3.Network. That's it!

If the router is used, you may want to reset custom settings by, holding in the reset pin till it cycles.

Advance setup.

If your modem is not also a router you can only connect one device to it. You should have a router instead of a switch. Otherwise check the settings on your modem to be sure the ports are open that are needed for the Sling Catcher.

Hi, Im using Linksys SR224 24 ports as my main switch. I got a poor internet connection, this problem occurs few weeks ago. I tried to connect my modem through a LAN cable directly to my server and...

Try a brand-new cable between the modem and the "uplink" port on the router.
Try a brand-new cable from one of the "LAN" ports to your computer, and test to see that you get a good connection.

How to connect the network cable

you will have 8 ethernet ports in this switch... One port is for input all the other ports are for output...
If you dont have any dedicated uplink port, then any port can be used as an uplink port and other ports becomes downlink port...
The Lan slot of router should be connected to the uplink port in switch.... you can connect upto 7 computers in this switch(in downlink ports)...

How do i set up my linksys to my laptop using a modem

If your modem is not one of the hybrid modem/router that has dhcp built in then what you need is a router instead of a switch. Think of a switch as a 2way phone adapter which just splits the signal and allows you to plug more phones or in this case PC's in. The problem is, your modem will only accept and bind to one mac address (PC). Get a router, plug the modem into the wan port of the router, now the modem binds to the router, you plug your pc's into the ethernet ports, if you need additonal ports you could plug in your switch to one of the ethernet ports but these days most folks have wireless on their laptops or desktops. When you purchase a router get one that has G or N standard, then you can broadcast your internet and enjoy it without all the wires.

How to connect netgear fs108 to cable modem

leeb..... switches cannot be connected to the Cable modem.... because NAT will not be enabled in cable there wont be any DHCP server present in the cable modem....
Nat will be enabled only in DSL modem like AT&T verizon etc....So DHCP server will be present inside DSL modem...that is the reason why switches can be connected only to the DSL modem....
With NAT enabled modem, switch will work as a switch.... With NAT disabled modem, switch will work as a hub.... This is the difference....
Any doubts further ? please clarify with me.... I am ready to help you....

How to link with 16 port switch with 8 port switch

Good question.
To link the new switch, take a short cable from the LAN port on the new Switch and connect it to one of the existing ports on the old or connected switch. it's just a daisychain.
Just keep in mind that the LAN connection on the Last switch must be connected to a PORT on the prior device on the LAN.

First, FYI, I hope you mean Switch and not Hub and I am to assume your Router's LAN ports are all in use as to why you want or need the 5 port Switch and that you have Wireless Access Points or maybe your Router is a Wireless Router.
Next, you have to connect your 5 port Switch to your Router LAN port. Next you need a Wireless Access Point device to plug into your 5 port Switch. It would be helpfull that all your devices are of the same name brand also.
Now you have a Wireless network.
