I wonder if it's a solder joint. Several people said it worked for a while after they moved it. That's one of the symptoms of bad joints, they're sensitive to mechanical vibration. Next time it shuts down hit it firmly. Then try to turn it on. If it stays then it's most likely a bad solder joint somewhere. If you don't fix it it could cause other things to fail, but it will definitely get progressively worse until hitting it won't keep it going more than a few minutes.
Just my guess.

I solved my problem I had emerson combo vcr and when a tape is inserted it worked so I just keep a old tape in the slot and the tv will stay on and play fine as soon as I remove the tape the tv will shut itself off after seconds. just will not stay on so try putting a tape or disc in and see if your set plays and if it does just keep a old tape or disc in the slot while you watch tv. It is a circuit board problem and too expensive to fix but I like the little set and the vcr which we like still works fine I just have to always have a tape in or it will turn itself off. thanks for all the tips hope mine helps someone else.

I was told by a repairman that this is a common problem with combo sets, esp Toshiba. He said that it's a problem with the board and would coast about $125 to fix--more than what I paid for the unit.

I just started to have this problem 2 days frustrating. Then discovered it would still play a tape. Everytime I took the tape out it would only stay on seconds then turn off. My solution I put an old tape in the vcr I have EWC1301 tv vcr combo. Now as long as a tape is in and stopped but not ejected the tv will stay on. So the old tape is staying in and I am watching the tv. I can still watch a tape if I want I just have to keep a tape in to watch the tv. Maby this would help some of the others. Don't know what made it start or how to fix it but at least this let me watch the tv. from dplongwith
