We bought a BOSCH DW last year and about two months before the guarantee expired the thing started to smell terribly like molten plastics during the heating phase for water and especially for drying. It seems to emanate especially from the black plastic lining on the back of the unit. We never had any problems before. Called the "engineer" who came round and woffled about the heating element that needs changing. Why? Needed some money I think. Probably just a thermostat problem. Anyway, don't know what he did, I wasn't there. He left. Same smell. Next engineer fumbled around, left, same smell. Guarantee now expired. Still smells. Any poor connection problems perhaps to a NTC element somewhere perhaps?
I read that others had the problem but I don't want to accept that it is normal as it didn't do that before. I will test-wash with a datalogger inside to get an idea of the internal temperature...
the black stuff you talk about is bitumen or tar this is used to insulate appliance keep heat in the tub and as sound deadening to muffle wash pulses as arms inside rotate.it wont be this that is smelling,a lot of these machines are fitted with a voltage suppresor to elimanate voltage spikes and smooth the current into machine when these start to fail they can smell of burning plastic and usually short out during wash heating they can be removed and the machine will work quite happily without it,you need to remove sidepanel on r/h/s to get to it if it is this it will look black and smell horrible the smell travels up the back of applianc thats wh it seems to come from bitumen cating.
Hello,
I have this exact same smell issue from the back black panel at rear of dishwasher (free standing so easy to pinpoint. I replaced the old bosch with this Bosch (approx 12 months ago) for the same reason, and am extremely disappointed to have the same issue. It is almost as though the black insulation material is disintegrating? I wonder what it is made from? Smells noxious. It is very hot to touch during a cycle too. Good luck,
Fiona

I have an exxcel Bosch dishwasher and the handle has locked itself in and when I push the door shut it pops back out and the latch won't engage. I have taken off the front panel and the spring etc. seems fine, I just can't release the latch mechanism and I can't see in the latch hole what to adjust. Any ideas/diagrams would be very helpful!
