Seriously speaking, you might wish to try your sim card in another phone (of the same operator). If that works you can be pretty sure the problem is with your phone.
Have you checked the network settings (check that "operator selection" is Automatic and that you're on the right GSM band (Not 1900 if you're in europe).

Chk sim card is registered or not?or else chk n/w settings in ur fone.
