When the unit is turned on, it boots up but will not go past the legal warning screen. Before this, there had been instances where the items on the touch screen did not work when selected. Is the screen bad or is there a software solution?

I had the same problem, before realising that text-to-speech on the TomTom XL on'y works if you've selected a *computer-generated" voice - and not all of them are. "Samantha/English-US" is computer-generated, for example, but "Tim/English-UK" is not (it's a recorded voice). When choosing from options in the "Change voice" menu option, check the top-right hand corner to tell whether a voice is computer-generated or not. Hope this helps.

The warranty only covers defective units, not human error. At this point, you might want to consider investing in a new unit altogether. You'll be able to get a new device for about the cost of shipping it out and repairing the old one. The One 130S with text to speech would be a solid replacement and they're on sale all over lately.

Your best bet is to purchase a non working unit from ebay with a good screen (ask if the unit has a good screen before bidding). I do this all the time. A new screen depending on your model will usually cost more than buying a new unit. Goggle changing the LCD screen on your model to learn how it is done. The tools you will need are not expensive. For most models you will need a # 8 and # 6 torx bit and a guitar pic to open the case.
