Unable to View Photos/Video - is my SD card to blame?

I recently bought a new 2GB Kingston Elite Pro 50x memory card and went on holidays. My first few dozen photographs all worked out just fine. After a certain point though, whenever I tried to preview the photos/vids on the camera I recieved an "unable to preview" message on a black screen. I could still view the earlier photos, just not the later ones. I did notice though, that after I took each photo, the little post-shoot preview would pop up just fine... I was puzzled. Now I am back home and have uploaded the photos to my PC. Those which I was able to preview normally on the camera are all fine. The others (despite being .JPG files and consistent in size with the working files) just get a "Can't determine type" message in Windows Photo Editor and a "Could not complete your request because an unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is found" in Adobe Photoshop CS3. There were some good holiday shots amongst these photos, so any suggestions as to how I could possibly resurrect them would be most welcome. Also, do you think that perhaps I have some kind of issue with the SD card? Thanks.

The question to ask is - is you camera happy with a 2 Gig card? Coming to files on the card you could try one or more of the recovery programs for example for 'pc inspector' see what this manages to pull up. You also try 'Irfanview' which has a little more latitude at file discrimination that a regular editor.

4gb kingston canon ixus 50

The IXUS 50 works with MMC and SD cards. Your new 4GB card is actually an SDHC card. While it fits into the slot, it is electronically incompatible and will not work. You need to use SD cards, 2GB and smaller.

Is my hp photosmart m537-001 compatible with kingston micro sd adapter?

Make sure you're using a microSD card, 2GB and smaller, and not a higher-capacity microSDHC card.

Missing pictures

Lets check the SD card first.

Take out the SD card and put it in external card reader connected to computer.

Copy/transfer all the photos from the SD card to computer.

goto My Computer and right-click the 'Removable Disk' (the SD card drive) and click Properties.
click Tools and click Error checking - Check now button
select the option 'automatically fix file-system errors' and click Start button.
if any errors was found and fixed, you can also Format the SD card. And your SD card should not drop photos again.

Now put SD card back in the camera.

Now take 20 test photos and check if something is missing.
if not take 20 more test photos and check if something is missing.
if all is ok then you can delete all test photos and start taking normal photos.

I need to purchase this memory car and don't know where to get it

Don't bother with a Vivitar Card (i'm not even sure they make them). Buy an SD Card from a decent brand like SanDisk, Kingston or PNY. A 512MB card will store about 200 photos with your camera. I'd recommend a 1/2gb card. More photos and can be found for peanuts these days.

Camera won't record on SD card

SD cards have become the industry standard....but beware...there are SD cards NOT backward compatible...i.e.,some cams won't take 2GB or larger; then there is SDHC; SDHC(HD); RUNS FROM 512G thru 32GB HC/HD; ECT...check your cams manual for SD card compatibility.

Hi.. I think you have solved the problem yourself... replace the adapter with a memory stick... You have eliminated the micro sd card as bad... now try a new known good memory stick..

Unable to view pics

Copy the existing photos on to your PC, switch off the camera. Remove the SD card and format the SD-card using a SD-card reader, this will clear all the card contents. Now try using it in your Camera again. Ideally, you should be able to save photos on this SD card. Other way would be to insert another SD card into your camera and click photos and check whether those photos are being saved into the SD card(this can be done using display option in your digicam.)

File error

I have seen this problem with generic SD memory cards so it could be a faulty memory stick.  Try to get a replacement.  If you want to try to recover the pictures you have taken, I suggest Zero Assumption Recovery (Google for it). Check to see if it is compatible with your camera before downloading.
