Question about Yamaha KX-W321 Single Cassette Deck

2 Answers

My Yamaha KX-W321 is rarely used. It was left unused for a year and then I started using it. First day the machine played fine but then the Deck B stopped ejecting due to mechanical jamming, which I solved. Then it stopped playback, rewind and forward. Please advise?

Yamaha has got the whole cassette assembly. just tell them if it's A or B side. becase it has different switches for the tape head one with erase the other PB only. this is a usual and common problem with Yamaha tape decks, nothign worng with the belts, the mechanism fails. you can get it to work one day, the next day it stops again.

i use to work with Yamah service and normally overhauling the mechnsm works but not a standard for Yamaha, they sometimes just replace the whole assembly.

If the heads are getting jammed in the up position it may be a failing capstan belt in the transport not disengaging the transport properly. replace the capstan belt. If one has failed both will probably be bad.

Stop Paying .. ????

if the take up side gets stuck it could feed excess tape and stop the mechanism. Look to see if both reels are turning when you push play. Remove cassette door for a better view if possible.

Make sure your tapes have NO slack in them. Fast forward and rewind one cassette all the way, then try again looking to see if both sides are turning. If not, you may have a belt that is old, stretched and slipping or it's split apart or just fallen off

Looking for schematic for Kenwood KX-55 stereo cassette tape deck

These dual cassette deck are rarely worth he effort to put repair time into. I checked Hi Fi Engine and they did not have anything. Is it worth a $100 repair bill? if not then look for a good solid single deck.

Sony tape deck won't play tape.

Dual well decks are among the cheapest and poor designs resulting in the problem you are having. Those decks that are well built may still need belts after a long time but the final result of the repair is a machine that will give good performance like when it was new while the dual cassette deck give the poor performance and then less due to wear that was had when they were new- figures like Wow and Flutter, speed accuracy and they rarely put really good heads in these as well. I fix them for clients but they never come up to a Teac C-3RX deck quality wise. Just so you know I have been working on tape deck for 40 years and even at Sony at one time. The ES line was the only good dual cassettes made and they have their problems too.

I have a kx-w4050 dual kenwood tape deck niether side will play hear click and counter moves one then another click. Is there a way to fix this?

Yes, the belts need to be check and idlers or whatever drive mechanism that is used in that system. Dual deck units are among the most unreliable units there are and a reason I tell people for the last 30 years not to buy those things. Almost most of the time they are not worth fixing due to their poor performance at the end. These are facts not just opinion.

Cassette deck RS-X950 ,record/play heads

They are, but it would be cheaper to buy another dual deck. Labor alone is the cost of the original deck.

Heads rarely need replacement. What's the problem?

Technics M14 cassette deck has hum. Bought used and had hum but I got it to go away by switching the tape select dial to metal, etc. but hum came back later. I'm thinking ground or a wire to that switch. ...

If the hum is audible without monitoring a tape playback it has nothing to do with the oxide formulation or any aspect of the media.

Determine the conditions present whenever the hum is present:

Player just turned ON?
Tape deck Playing or Paused?
Tape deck Recording or Paused?
"Tape" selected at the receiver?
Any source selected?

What switch are you referring to? You could have a floating ground or shield through a Tape Monitor or other control. Audio cables between the Deck and the receiver could be faulty or require reseating with a twisting motiuon to remove oxide build-up.

Hum can enter any unshielded cable running near any motor, magnetic field or some light sources. Sometimes simply reversing the polarity of an AC power cord will cure it.

Static in the middle of a recording.

I had the same problem, but the reason for it seemed to be that the USB cable from the cassette deck wasn't plugged directly into my computer, but via a hub. When I plugged the cable directly into my computer (PC, using Windows XP), the problem disappeared, or seems to have disappeared so far.

Dual tape deck inoperable

clean the rubber pinch rollers with an alcohol swab. the tape is not getting required "grab" on these rollers and not pulling tape. the auto reverse is an attempt to rewind the tape because of confusion with no tape movement.
