Question about Samsung SyncMaster 172N 17" LCD Monitor

Problem with display, need help finding what the problem is

When the monitor is turned on, the display is mainly a bright white color with horizontonal lines across it, also a 1/2 inch black horizontal line seems to be floating down the monitor, like a waterfall and starts back at the top. I need to know is this a power supply issue(capacitor replacement) or is it some lighting issue. If it is the lighting issue, anyone know how to fix it and walk me through step by step. Thanks

Re: Problem with display, need help finding what the...

I have the same problem with my monitor and it did not happen until windows update started installing a driver---before that my monitor was working fine. (It was on automatic update) I think it is because the new driver sets the monitor at 100hertz and the syncmaster works best at 60 hertz ( I think).

Since I am unable to see anything on the monitor I do not know how to reset this though. I do think if I could get it working at a lower refresh rate then it would work again---damn automatic updates anyway.

I took my puter back to an earlier date before it had upgraded but my monitor still has the line thing going on. Hope someone has some suggestions for this.

Dear User...

You can adjust the brightness and contrast of your monitor to improve the readability of text and to make digital pictures appear more like they'll look when printed.

To improve the results when adjusting the brightness and contrast settings for your display, use Display Color Calibration. (Display Color Calibration helps you adjust these color settings and others.) For more information about calibrating your display color in Windows, see Calibrate your display.

The way you adjust brightness and contrast varies and depends on your specific display.

Brightness and contrast buttons on the front of the monitor. Some monitors have brightness and contrast controls on the front and use the standard symbols shown in the following image.

On-screen menu. You can change the brightness and contrast settings for some displays by using an on-screen menu, and then setting the brightness and contrast in the resulting menu. Many times, you can view the on-screen menu by pressing a button-possibly labeled Menu-on the front of the monitor.

My monitor stays white it wont show any display

black-icon.gif This icon indicates the BRIGHTNESS control, more properly called BLACK LEVEL. It adds or subtracts an offset, or bias, into the red, green, and blue signals. This control should be adjusted so that black picture content displays as true black on your monitor. Misadjustment of this control is the most common problem of poor quality picture reproduction on computer monitors, video monitors, and television sets. Later in this document, I will explain how to set this control properly. The setting is somewhat dependent upon ambient light. Modern display equipment is sufficiently stable that frequent adjustment is unnecessary.

picture-icon.gif This icon indicates the CONTRAST control, preferably called PICTURE. It applies a scale factor (gain) to the red, green, and blue signals. It affects the luminance (proportional to intensity) that is reproduced for a full white input signal. Once BRIGHTNESS is set correctly, CONTRAST should be set for comfortable viewing brightness.

The gamma can be controlled through Video Card utility which can usually be accessed by going to display properties.

Depending on your video card software you may be able to right click your desktop, select properties, select settings tab and then choose advanced, towards the bottom. In there you may find a tab called Monitor and under that tab you may or may not (depending on your video card software) be able to adjust your color correction settings(gamma & brightness & contrast).

. Right click on the desktop and then select Properties

2. Click on the Settings tab and then click on the Advanced button.

3. Click on the Color Correction tab and you will see settings for Brightness, Contrast, and Gamma
