Re: External hard drive

Try these steps: - Right-click on "My Computer" - Click "Manage" - Click on the "Disk Management" icon in the left column (Under the "Storage" category" - If your disk appears on the right-hand side, then try to right-click on it and create a partition. The issue may just be that, since the disk is not partitioned/formatted, a drive letter has not been assigned, which would cause it to not show up in the "My Computer" list Good luck!

Windows will not start with a Toshiba external hard drive plugged into USB

Computer starts normally in windows with a windows that is installed on a hard disk on that copmuter. In other words - windows is installed on an internal hard disk of a computer A. If you get it out and put in a computer B it wont work.

To have the things work:
1. First should set in BIOS boot up options first boot device CD/DVD, second OTHER/USB/EXTERNAL, third HDD
2. Should boot up from a CD and install windows on an external hard disk (in your case your 3TB Toshiba external HD)
3. Set in BIOS boot up options first boot device OTHER/USB/EXTERNAL, second internal hard disk e.g. HDD0, HDD1

My computer wont detect my external

Hello Friend, after reading your problem i suggest you that first check your connection cable it may be corroded or stretched try new cable this may be solve your problem.
If still you got same problem then go to manufacturer for solving this because this may be internal problem like your hard drive lens is not working or the driver card may gone this is done sometime because of attaching or removing hard drive unsafely like just plug in and out do not use safety remove option. So go to manufacturer of hard drive if it is in warranty then they may repair or even replace it.
Hope this will solve your problem.Best of Luck...

My WD external hard drive does not stay recognized on my computer. When I first plug it in it makes the ding/beep noise and shows up on "my computer" but after a few seconds it makes the ding/beep noise...

Try the hard drive on another computer to see if it is the external or a laptop interface problem. There are EIDE/SATA to usb adapters that you can connect a hard drive to that the computer will then read as an external hard drive. The problem with external HDDs is the usb interface built into them, these are mounted on controller cards and that is ususally where the failure occurs.

Mac will find wd hard drive PC will not

The Mac disk format cannot see or read by a PC, the PC can see the external drive as a device only.
The way around this problem is to format the external drive with the PC, now you can fransfer/copy files to the external drive and when you plug it into the Mac, the MAC can read PC file formats, this also applies to USB memory sticks.

Does the drive have a socket for external power?  or do you have a USB cable with 2 usb and 1 mini usb?
Sounds like it needs external power.

My computer stopped reading my external hard drive

Try the drive in a different USB port. If it still fails try another computer. If it still fails then it's possible the drive is bad. If the warranty has expired you may be able to find a tech savvy friend to remove the actual drive from the case and hook it up to another computer directly. If it recognizes fine then the case is bad. If it does not recognize the drive then the drive is dead.

You won't be able to retrieve the files on the drive unfortunately unless you use an extremely expensive service. These tend to run in the hundreds of dollars.

Maxtor OneTouch 4 500GB External USB 2.0 and cannot access it. My computer does show only icon with now information

It is a bit boring and I do not know why it should be but for some reason your computer and new hard drive do not strike it off initially, just like other new-comer situations. Just keep on trying.
With your computer on, plug in external drive and switch on, it should then give a signal to your computer that a new device has been added. This provided that you are running ';Windows millennium, xp later DOS.
It seems to me that The Maxtor Being a "removable device" needs to be unplugged and plugged in again whenever you restart your computer, Perhaps this is what is happening, However as in my case I continued to do this until until the my computer got to rely on the new hard drive so much it could not run without it.
Good luck
