Dishwasher runs for 3 hours

My kenmore dishwasher takes 3 hours to run.

  • christinewes May 03, 2009

I have tried this, it is not on sani wash or anything else, just the smart wash setting. If I wash on the normal setting it takes 5 to 6 hours. The machine is about 5 years old, I bought the house a year ago and it was with the house. Do I just need a new one.

You may be running the sani-wash or heated drying. The heat element in these things takes a long time.

Check these and turn them off - then try another wash cycle and time it to see - should be one hour or less

My guess would be the timing mechanism is shot in that case.

Dishwashers have more moving parts and more wear and tear than most other appliances (except possibly the washing machine.)

You also don't know how hard the previous owners were on it. (Was it run 3 times a day, or 3 times a week for example?)

Consumers Reports basic recommendation is to replacement rather than repair at the 6 to 8 year range as being more cost effective. If it came with the home it was probably a builders unit quality wise which is seldom better than the low end.

Since this will probably run you approximately 50% of the cost of a new unit (with the labour) I would recommend replacement based on the above facts.

Newer machines also are much quieter running than a few years ago by the way.

My 17352 Kenmore dishwasher runs for an hour or more. Can this be adjusted?

There are wash, rinse, and dry cycles that all take time. Cycle settings allow you to vary this. For example, potscrubber mode will take longer than normal wash. You can opt for no heat drying to shorten the cycle, but then the dishes will be wet and can have possible spotting. Experiment with the controls and find the settings that give you the results you want in the least amount of time. But just FYI, an hour isn't that long for a dishwasher to cycle - many run longer than that.

Dishwasher takes 3 hours to run through programme

3 hours isn't "extremely" long. If you run a normal cycle, it should run about 2-2:30 hours normally with the drying cycle. Now if it's over 3 hours, that would be a problem. Make sure that when you open the door that there is a lot of steam coming out, because that is the only thing that can extend the cycle is if the dishwasher isn't heating the water. Unfortunately this is a very common issue and it means that your control board inside the door has failed. There is a relay on the board that shorts out. This relay sends power to the heater, so when it fails the dishwasher doesn't wash well and it will run forever trying to heat the water which will never happen.

Normal wash cycle is over 2 hours?

Hello there
If your dishwasher's cycle times are too long, check these: Water pre-heating Cycle not completing Water pre-heating Your dishwasher may pre-heat the water. If so, and if the water entering the dishwasher is cool, the heater may take up to half an hour to heat the water. To avoid the wait, increase the incoming water temperature before turning on the dishwasher. Do that by running the kitchen sink faucet until the water runs hot. Or increase the temperature of the hot water to the entire house at the hot water heater. Warning! To lessen the risk of scalding, don't set the hot water heater temperature higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

My dishwasher takes 2.5 hours to run, what's wrong with it?

Check user guide. Check the program you have switched. Two hours or little more is OK. But check your inlet water flow to the machine. If it is slow then also you will get this delay.

Smart wash: 2 hours Anti-bacterial wash: 2.5 hours Normal wash: 2 hours China/Gentle: 1.5 hours Quick Rinse: 10 minutes
Note: If water temperature is low the times shown above will be extended to allow for water heating time.
This information is from page 14 of the manual.

Kenmore

Make sure you run water in your sink until it is hot before you start the dishwasher. On the newer dishwashers they will fill and drain until the water is hot enough so it takes longer if it starts with cold water. Normal time for a basic wash could take about 45 min.
