Toshiba a300 synaptic touch pad scroller stopped working

Okay, so I have a Toshiba a300 laptop and the synaptic touch pad works but a message comes up and says the device is not working properly. The touchpad still works but usually on the right hand side, if you move your finger up and down, its like a scroller but after this message comes up, that scroller stops working. It eventually randomly starts working again and then stops again, not sure why its happening. Please help!
