Seems like you have installed only printer driver. Download the scanner driver for device seperately and install the scanner software also. And try again.

There is no need to install any software for scanning from Windows 7 computer.
It's very easy
On computer click "Start" (windows icon)
click "All Programs"
click "Windows Fax and Scan"
click "Scan" and complete the scan as per on-screen instructions there
Make sure printer is turned on and connected to computer through usb cable properly.
I have the F4283 and the scan button has never worked (I'm on my second). I put the paper in the scanner than start the scan via the solution centre on the pc.
Your best bet would be to get the latest driver from www.hp.com . Find the driver page and enter your model number. From there you can download the latest drivers.
If that doesn't work, it's probably faulty hardware. Check if warranty is an option, or you might be better off getting a new machine.
1. All you need is Uninstall the the printer from your control panel. 2. go to my computer and open your Hard drive (C:) 3. Go to the programs folder and open it. 4. delete the HP F4280 folder. 5. reinstall the printer.
Make sure that your printed is not connected to your PC during software installation until you are being told to do so.
