My Indesit won't advance, won't com...

My indesit washer, when you try to set it, will only work on number 4, and only then after you restart it once. The initial time always results in the knob clicking round and round. Then, after resetting, it will wash on number 4, but will not advance to rinse and spin (It would wash forever I suppose) unless you stop it, let it sit for a few moments, turn the knob to rinse, then turn it back on. It will then complete the cycle without stopping. What could it be?
