Question about Dell Dimension 3000 PC Desktop

Model number and socket type for my Dimension 3000

Do I need a processor to fit a socket 478 or a LGA 775, and do I need the exact same model number on my processor? Mine melted the sticker on its face and is unreadable. Thanks for your help.

That would all depend on the processor you want to use. You would need to find one with the same FSB as the Celeron you are removing. If you look on the CPU you will see a group of numbers one of the will be the frequency, one is the cache RAM and one is the FSB. For the period of your computer it is likely to be in the region of 533mhz. Having looked at the CPU world database, the answer is NO. The Tower you are asking about has a socket 478 not a 775, according to the Lenovo website.

Intel Pentium D what?

I need the model number.

Same for that Xeon,

Since the Intel Pentium D uses an LGA 775 processor socket, I just picked out a few Core examples for Xeon's, that do too.
I didn't link them all.

Also I notice that they start with a 1066MegaHertz Front Side Bus.
(1066MHz FSB)
Plus go up to a 1333MHz FSB.

The Intel Pentium D's listed use an 800MHz FSB.
(Unless you're talking about Extreme Editions. They use 1066MHz)

So do I guess your motherboard has an LGA 775 processor socket, and can support processors with Up To a 1066MHz, or 1333MHz FSB?

When I get the exact model number, I can show you precise Thermal Design Point; for each processor. (TDP)
(On Intel Support)

Then it can be determined if a processor fan for a Pentium D, can be used on that Intel Xeon you have.

Off hand looking at both links I gave, I would say yes.

The TDP range for the Intel Pentium D's, ranges from 90 to 130.
The maximum TDP I saw for an Intel Xeon, was 135.

As for the mini-fan on that Nvidia graphics card, if you feel it isn't enough; then suggest buy a better one.

Dell dimension maximum cpu upgrade

This desktop has a motherboard in it that has an intel LGA 775 processor socket in it. From the spec's I found the cpu that ships with the system should be able to scale up to 3.5 Ghz. But you should be able to replace it with any Pentium 4 that fits into an LGA 775 socket.

Left-click on - Technical Specifications - in the list.

Left-click on - Physical - in the list.

Height: How tall the computer tower is. Outside edge to outside edge measurement.
Width: How wide the computer tower is. Outside edge to outside edge measurement.
Depth: How long the computer tower is. Outside edge to outside edge measurement.

If you meant Specifications instead;

A) Processor:
Intel Celeron, or Pentium 4, that uses a Socket 478 processor socket.
Either a 533MegaHertz Front Side Bus, or an 800MHz FSB.

(Dell also indicates the Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition processors are supported. Too expensive for what you get in return)

B) Ram Memory:
DDR Sdram that operates at 333MHz, or 400MegaHertz.
PC2700 and PC3200 respectively.

Maximum TOTAL Amount is 4GigaByte
There are 4 Ram Memory slots. EACH slot has a Maximum Amount of 1GB.

C) Motherboard Chipset:

Northbridge chip: Intel 875P. (Part Number Intel 82875P )

(For Intel the Northbridge chip is the MCH, for this particular Northbridge chipset.
Memory Controller Hub)

The Southbridge chip is an Intel 82801EB (Part Number) or Intel 82801ER (P/N)
Commonly known as the Intel ICH5, or Intel ICH5R.

In the chart go down on the right side to - 875P

Looking across, and at the headings, you can see under the heading - Processors, that there are more Intel processors supported, than just the Intel Celeron's, and Pentium 4's.

Core2 Duo, Core2 Quad, Core2 Extreme, Pentium Dual Core, and Xeon.

Problem is they don't use a Socket 478 processor socket.
All except for the Xeon ( 'Zee-On' ) use an LGA 775 processor socket.

It is just processors that the Intel 875P chipset will support.

Need to upgrade cpu for using multiple progams at on time, can cpu be upgraded on this older model compaq presario S0000 / 8000 series computer

As you have stated it's a Compaq Presario S0000/S8000 SERIES desktop computer.

One of the S0000/S8000 series.
Without knowing the exact model number I have no idea of what hardware is installed on the motherboard.

On the back of the computer tower, or up on the side, is a white Service Tag.
P/N = Product Number. This is the exact model number I need.

Also; Going to HP Support with the exact model number may not reveal the info I need, either.
They may not list the specifications, and therefore the installed hardware, for your computer.
There is an easy way around this, however.
Use CPU-Z from

What info is needed in order to know if the Processor can be upgraded:

A) Processor Socket: What processor socket is installed on the motherboard. This is what the Processor sits in.

Just two examples for Intel processors; Socket 478, and LGA 775 processor socket.


With this style of processor socket, the processor socket has the socket holes, and the processor has the contact pins. (478 holes/478 pins)


With this style of processor socket, the socket has the pins, while the processor has contact pads.

There are other styles of Intel processor sockets. There are also AMD processors which can be used, and have many different processor sockets also.

B) What motherboard chipset is used.
Specifically, what Northbridge chip is used.

3) Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C.
Integrated Circuit,

For your motherboard the motherboard chipset is a Northbridge chip, and a Southbridge chip.

{So aptly named Northbridge, and Southbridge, for the relation of how they sit on the motherboard.
Looking at a motherboard as if it were a map, the Processor sits to the North.

The Northbridge chip sits close to the Processor.
The Southbridge chip sits to the 'South' on the motherboard }

The Northbridge chip handles the faster capabilities of a computer.
It handles the Processor, Ram Memory, and High-speed graphics.

The Southbridge chip handles the slower capabilities of a computer.

4) Motherboard Diagram,

Knowing what processor socket is used, and what Northbridge chip, we can accurately determine what processors are supported.

CPU-Z is a tiny, free program that without opening your computer, tells you what hardware is installed on your motherboard.
Tells you what processor socket, and Northbridge chip are used, for one.

When CPU-Z opens it automatically opens to the CPU tab.

The Asus PTGD1-LA motherboard, is a Proprietary motherboard, made Especially for HP.
HP's name is PufferM-UL8E

You won't find it on the Asus Support website.

Fortunately, HP listed basic information for CPU (Processor) Support.

When you look to the right of the CPU/Processor heading, you can see it states -
A) Socket LGA 775 (Processor socket)

Looks like this,

Processors that fit this processor socket, have the socket holes.
775 of them.
The LGA 775 processor socket, has the pins that go up into the socket holes of the Processor.
775 of them.

[The Socket 478 processor socket, that was before the Land Grid Array 775 processor socket, has the socket holes (478), and the processors that fit this processor socket, has the pins. {478 of them]

B) Supports processors with up to a 3.8GigaHertz frequency rate.

['Speed' is a slang term for Frequency Rate.
Giga = Approximately 1 Billion
Hertz stands for Cycles per Second.

3.8 Billion Cycles per Second.
Can also be stated as 3800 MegaHertz.
Mega = approximately 1 Million ]

C) Can support Intel Pentium 4 processors with HT.
Hyperthreading Technology.

D) Looking to the right of the Front-side bus (FSB) heading, you will see it states -

This means the Asus PTGD1-LA motherboard will support Pentium 4 processors with,
1) HT
2) UP TO a 3.8GHz frequency rate
3) Up to a FSB frequency rate of 800Megahertz.
4) Use an LGA 775 processor socket.

Now let's look at one example, of a chart of Pentium 4's with HT, that fits these specifications,

See the heading - Prescott (90nm)?
This means the processors in this chart, are based on the Prescott Core, and the 90nm architecture.

(nm stands for NanoMeter. Approximately 1 Billionth of a meter)

Looking at the headings in the chart, you will see Model Number, sSpec Number, Frequency, L2-cache, Front-Side Bus, Multiplier, Voltage, TDP, Socket, Release Date, Part Number/s, and Release Price.

At this point I would only concern myself with the,
Model Number, (If applicable),
sSpec Number,
FSB, (Front Side Bus),
and Part Number(s)

1) Model Number:
The older Intel Pentium 4 HT processors did not have a Model Number.
Intel didn't start using a Model Number until later.
Model Number examples start with 517, 520, 520J, and so on.

Look for the sSpec Number, and the Part Number, for the older Pentium 4 HT's. They're printed on the top of the processor's case, and should be listed by the seller.

2) sSpec Number:
Intel brought this out.
Their way of marking a processor.
Another identifier for you to use.

3) Frequency:
The Maximum frequency rate, ('Speed'), that the Processor is supposed to be able to operate at.

4) L2-cache:
The small memory area for the Processor. The Processor accesses this small memory area first, because it operates at the same frequency rate as the Processor.

You can't change it, and 2MB of L2-cache, is the largest size for an Intel Pentium 4 with HT.
Just thought I would include this information.

(Ram Memory is next. Typically, Ram Memory operates at half of the FSB frequency rate. The Harddrive is next)

5) Front-Side Bus (FSB):
The frequency rate that the Processor transfers data (Information) to the Northbridge chip, and back from the Northbridge chip.
More on the Northbridge chip in a moment.

6) Voltage:
Pretty self-explanatory. The Voltage range the Processor will use.
You need the Voltage range of 1.25/1.4 Volts.
(1.25 Volts to 1.4 Volts)

Any Processor (That is Intel Pentium 4 HT, Socket LGA 775), that uses Voltage in this range will work.

7) Socket:
The type of processor socket that the Processor will fit in.
Has to be LGA 775.

8) Part Number(s)
Self-explanatory again.
The Part Number, that is stamped on top of the Processor's top case.

Part Number(s) is listed, because there may be more than one Processor in the Model Series, that fits the same specifications.

If there is no Model Number, refer to the sSpec Number, or Part Number.

The largest frequency rate (Speed) of Processor you can use, is a Pentium 4 HT that operates at 3.8GHz. (And fits in an LGA 775 processor socket)

Barring that a Pentium 4 at 3.8GHz cannot be found, you will know what Processors you Can use.

Scroll across the headings with your eyes, and start under the Frequency heading.

Find the frequency rate ('Speed') you wish to try.

Go across to the Front Side Bus heading. You should look for a processor listed that has an 800MHz listing.

Look at the Voltage.
All of the Intel Pentium 4 HT processors that fit in an LGA socket, use an 800MHz FSB, and are in THIS particular chart, fall within the same Voltage range.

Keep the Voltage range in your mind, as you look at the other charts below this one.

You know you need a processor that fits in an LGA 775 socket.

Look at the chart below this Prescott Core (90nm) example.
Prescott 2M Core (90nm)

Use the above criteria above in this chart.

I wouldn't recommend any Pentium 4 HT's, in the Cedar Mill (65nm) chart.
It isn't that the architecture is smaller (65nm), but that the BIOS program,and version on your motherboard, may not be able to handle these processors listed.

I also do not see a BIOS update for one, and for two, if you make a mistake when performing a BIOS update, your motherboard becomes an expensive Frisbee, or doorstop.

You also do not want any of the processors listed under the Pentium 4 Extreme Edition heading.

(Mobile Processors are for laptops Laptops are M-O-B-I-L-E)

Northbridge chip.

1) The Northbridge chip, and the Southbridge chip make up the motherboard chipset.

(Does not apply to the new motherboards that support the Intel i3, i5, and i7 Core processors)

2) Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C.

What do you need to look for in the motherboard specifications?

I suggest you start by going to,

In the box to the right of -> product search: <- type your model name and model number.
Example: Pavilion 7955

This will take you to the main page for your computer. See if -> Product Specifications <- is listed.
Click on that. Now see if -> Motherboard Specifications <- is listed. Click on that.

Look to see what processor socket you have, what Northbridge chipset you have, and what the Maximum Total Amount of ram memory is for the motherboard.

1.Processor: Intel Quad Core Q9650
Your motherboard has to have the LGA 775 processor socket. Also know as Socket T.
This processor socket has the pins in it, and the processor has the socket holes. The older Socket 478, had the socket holes, while the processor had the pins.

You need a Northbridge chip that will support the Q9650.
IF, your motherboard has an LGA 775 processor socket, I'm willing to bet your Northbridge chip is an Intel one.
This is a list of Intel chipsets. I have saved the link, to come up on Intel chipsets, that are for the Intel Core2. Match your HP motherboard's, Northbridge chipset, up with the one's listed on this chart. Look down the left column under the heading -> Chipset. After you find your chipset name, look across to the right. See if this chipset supports -> Core 2 Quad.

Example: The 945GC chipset supports Pentium 4, Pentium D, Celeron, Core 2 Duo, and the Intel Atom processor. Does not support Core 2 Quad.
The P965 supports (Uses) Core 2 Duo, and Core 2 Quad.

You may find that a BIOS Upgrade is needed also.

i think the 1mb cache version is lga 775 instead of socket 478. if this is the case, then the processor is not supported.

Your processor is a Pentium 4 processor that uses there are 3 different type of sockets for Pentium processors. Socket 423, socket 478, and the latest one is socket 775.
Based on the information here:

Your MoBo has a Socket 478 and since it only support 400MHz bus, then your maximum upgrade is 2.0MHz, because all other devices faster than that, need higher bus speed that your Mother Board does not support.
