Re: hard disk acess problem

Hi, What the message mean is that Windows can not read/understand the filing system (something like the Table of Contents in a book) and therefore do not which and where are your files in the 80Gb. A few things you can try: 1. Run Windows Scandisdk on the Hitachi 80Gb; 2. Run any third party disk check/utility such Norton Disk Doctor. Alternately, you can use a file recovery software (such as GetDataBack) to recover/copy all your important files from the 80Gb and transfer them to another mass storage device. Thereafter, you can re-partition and re-format the said Hitachi to start new/fresh/clean. Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back how things turnes up or should you need further information. Good luck and kind regards.

Trying to transfer data from an old harddrive i have (maxtor, diamondmax plus 9 80 GB ATA / 133 HDD) to My HP laptop

Install the hard drive into an USB hard drive adapter case the plug this USB hard drive into the USB port in your laptop. The laptop will see it as an external storage device, open the various folders and copy the files to your laptop.
You can delete any unwanted files off this external USB hard disk and use it for backups and file transfer.

I am trying to download movies off my friends portable hard drive onto my laptop but when I plug in my friends hard drive into my laptop, my laptop don't recognize it and nothing comes up???

Your laptop's usb port may not have enough power to keep the portable hard drive running.

You may require additional power to the portable hdd by using a usb cable with 2 usb connectors.
or use a USB port that is powered.

Installed my hitachi deskstar 120GB hard drive into a case and hooked up to power and usb port but my computer cannot access it. It sees it as installed hardware but i can't click on it and get the data.

Hi Guest!

Assuming you are on Windows XP or Vista,

go and right click on My Computer, click Manage.

go down to the entry labelled Disk Management.

See if you can see that drive listed in this view.

if you can, it is likely that a drive letter is not associated to the drive itself!

just right click on the drive, and click on Change Drive Letter or Path.

Select a unique drive letter, and boom, it should pop up as a removable drive.

If you havent yet formatted the device, you can do that through here as well. Remember that Fat32 will not show the full drive amount, I recommend NTFS, or make several FAT32 partitions. This can all be done through this Disk Management window.

for help on Formatting , that should be a seperate question however.

External hard drive device installer error

Has it got its own power supply or is it using a two USB ended cable. It could be your laptop cannot supply enough power via one USB port so that it really needs a two ended cable so that two USB ports will power it up. Try this Mark

Hitachi 80 GB. USB HDD problam.

If you plug it in and it does not appear, it may be choosing the wrong drive letter.
If that drive letter is already in use it will not appear.

Open the start menu, right click on my computer, then choose manage.
Select (on the left) Disk Management.

If it appears in there.
Find the thumbdrive in the list and right-click and choose 'Assign a new drive letter' . Make it like M or somthing far down in the alphabet.

If that does not appear under the disk management then the disk might be physically damaged.

An urban myth (which does sometimes work) includes putting the drive in the freezer for a day or so.

Also remember it might be somthing as simple as a bad cable or port on the computer. Try to access it with a new cable from a diffrent computer.

Not Detected on PC

Since you say that it is detected in Device Manager and is shown as working properly, it would appear that the problem is that it is not getting a drive letter. Have you added anything recently that might take up a drive letter like a flash drive? If so, try removing both and then plugging the WD back in. If this is not the case or does not help, do this:

Assuming you are using XP.
Right click on My Computer and select Manage
The computer Management window will open, click on Disk Management
Do you see the WD in the window on the right?
Does it show a drive letter?
If not, you can assign it one by right clicking on it and selecting Change Drive Letter and Paths ...

If the WD does not show up in Disk Management, possible problems are:
1) USB cable is damaged, try another one.
2) USB circuits in the WD case not working properly, hard drive can be removed and put into another case.
3) WD USB case is good, hard drive is good but there is a loose connection inside. Open case and reseat everything.
4) WD USB case is good but the hard drive inside has gone bad (worst case scenario)

USB device ok, but no drive seen

if you have 1394 also know as firewire, use that option. If this is an external hard drive, like what is depicted, than it maybe possible the enclosure has failed.Try testing with other cables or ports.
