CPU - P4 3ghz prescott, windows XP SP3, GPU - ATI x1950 PRO.
Hi, i have a problem with trying to max my memory out to 3gb. I currently have 2 x 1gb pc3200 ddr (PNY) sticks. All is good but i wanted to add a further 1gb to bring it up to 3gb. My pc will post OK and the mem test is OK but windows won't load ( it gets to the black screen then restarts and sometimes the display is garbled) with my AGP card connected. I can get my pc to load windows with the onboard graphics & the 3 gb mem set to pc2700 in the bios, but as i love cod4 it won't work with the onboard gpu!
Has anyone been able to max out the mem to 3gb running at 400Mhz ?
I think I got the answer here.
This is a limitation of the SiS 661 / 963 chipset used on this motherboard.
This SiS chipset officially supports:
3GB max of PC2100 memory, or
2GB max of PC2700 memory, or
1GB max of PC3200 memory.
Bummer, yea I know. I'm using this mainboard too.
Hence the reason you can only run 2 x 1GB sticks of PC2700 or PC3200 (aka. DDR333 or DDR400) memory.
DDR400 is backward compatible so you could slow these stick down in BIOS to PC2100 (DDR266) settings if you want to use 3 x 1GB.
Best not to mix RAMs.
You quote one of your memory sticks as being pc 2700 when earlier in your text you qoute pc3200.
Firstly pc 3200 is 400 mhz clock speed memory.Secondly, pc 2700 is 333mhz clock speed and you acnnot mix the two on the same board. Thirdly does your board support 3ghz anyway. If you are running a board at 400mhz, pc2700 memory will not run at 400mhz.
Solution, take out the pc 2700 memory and all will be well.
