External crashes any computer connected to it

I was in mid download of portal in steam when steam crashed, so i left it to see if it would come back or not when i realized it was making this chirping sound and my computer didn't recognize it anymore. I turned it off and unplugged it. A few minutes later i tried to restart my computer with the external on but my computer never booted up windows. So then i tried just plugging it into my lap top and it crashed as soon as i turned on the drive. Same thing happened on my desktop as well. Can someone tell me what happened and even better a way to fix it would be greatly appreaciated.

Re: External crashes any computer connected to it

Extract the drive from the case. The drive and/or enclosure has failed. place the drivein a known good working enclosure and keep moving. what computer is your main system?

Keep me posted.

Can i transfer information to a mac

If the external hard drive has been formatted on a PC in NTFS file format then the MAC cannot read data off this hard drive.
The FIX..
Connect the USB external hard drive to a Windows computer and copy your data off this hard drive to the computer.
Then format the external hard drive in FAT32 file format. (the MAC can read and write to data to and from a Windows PC)
Now copy the your data from the computer back onto the external hard drive.
Now you can connect the external hard drive to the MAC and download your data to the MAC.

Mac OS X Computer crashed: how to restore from storejet 25P

Hard drive recovery software is the exact answer for your question how to restore crashed hard drive Mac data. Some days back, due to software conflicts my Mac hard drive was crashed and I was unable to access my data stored in it. I was really tensed because the stored data was very much important to me. Then I searched over the internet and found this software which successfully restored all my lost data and I was very much happy after getting back my data. The software can be downloaded either from official website or by simply clicking here.

Good luck,

External hard drives are plug and play, the drivers are build into windows.
IF the hard drive was connected when your computed crashed, and the hard drive was in use, it may have damaged it.
If it does not automatically connect to other PC's looks like it has been damaged

Connect the external drive to a different computer, and "browse" the contents of the drive -- if the disk can be read, then the files can be copied, and maybe burned to "blank" writable CD/DVD disks.

I was copying something from my External Drive to my computer hard drive. the copy froze and my computer froze i had to restart and ever since I can't get my External Drive to connect to my computer.

you need to scan your external hard drive for bad sectors problems, you can use winpe mini cd, its a live cd that have hirens boot disk inside it as well as a preinstalled windows eviorment that will give you access to many tools and it , burn it to disk and boot it.....

the idea is when you was copying files, some read errors occured that crashed the system, and whene the system crashed, bad sectors/clusters appears, and they need to be scaned and fixed.

Don't know how to use product, no directions

It should plug in as a Windows Storage device. This will appear as another drive on the computer.
Copy the file across the "new" drive.
Then ask windows to stop using the drive  by clicking on the USB device icon and selecting stop storage device.
Then you can disconnect it safely.

My previous hp computer crashed due to spyware infection. I manually back up my maxtor performed 3-4 days prior to infection. Will the Maxtor files be safe to download into my new computer?

Well since you've said that you computer crashed due to a spyware infection and that you backed up your maxtor some days to the infection, there is every likelihood that the maxtor will also be infected. My advice to you will be to first of all scan the maxtor file with a very strong anti virus before sending it to your new computer or else you will end up loosing your new computer if the maxtor file also contain the spyware infection.

WD External drive not recognized on computer

If the drive was running when it fell, and it doesn't have a head locking mechanism (or was in mid-read, or mid-write and the head wasn't locked down) then your disk may have experienced a head crash. The read/write heads float over the surface of the disk. If they slam into the disk, they will make a divot, boucne, make another divot, and continue bouncing until the kenetic energy is dissipated. In the places where magnetic material is removed, you won't get any data back. You may be able to recover data elsewhere, using a recovery company, but it won't be cheap. If your data is critical, you have a good chance of recovery using a service such as Seagate Recovery They recover data from all brands and I have used them They're very good, but very expensive ($800 range)

Is it possible to get pictures off crashed hard drive.

You can still recover your data. Just follow these instructions:

Connect that harddisk to another computer with Windows XP. Check if harddisk is detected on that computer. If yes then check that partitions are showing if yes then simply copy your data.
If partitions are not shown that you have to download software named Get Data Back / RxStudio

And run either of these software to recover your data.

Hope this will help you. May God help you.
