My burner was working fine for over a year recording dvd/cd's but within the last wk now anytime i stick any sort of disc in my drive it doesn't read it. When i look at my dvd drive from my computer it looks like there's no media inserted in the drive but there is. Whether it's blank or has something on it it's not getting read. How can i fix this problem?

Re: Not Reading Disc
Probably a broken / misaligned laser. Could also be a bad internal motor, can you hear it spinning when you insert a disc?
Theres not a ton you can do really, if you're really skilled and have a lot of time you can realign the laser with a digital multimeter and a screw driver, but you have to be very technically inclined. You're better off purchasing a new one. Newegg.com sells dvd burner for less than 30 dollars new.

Good day sir, Try to clean it with a CD lens cleaner if problem persist.I recommend replacing your optical disk drive or use it as a slave for reading CD's so that your new ODD will last long. in my opinion most DVDRAM, player etc. can read most formats except Bluray disc. using the device from reading CD,VCD and DVD lessen's the device life span. sometimes if we rarely use the ODD its already not working.
Type of media settings might be the issue but making a
change for standard CD/DVD recording (it affects reading too) Issue can
be resolved. Right click on the CD/DVD drive (Usually D or E drive ) click
on properties and select and choose the recording option. Click the
enable CD recording for this drive option
on apply and OK. Try again. You may try after reboot the computer. If
issue persist please post so we can think about some alternate
Ok it seems as if the drive may be dying or is dead. You said you used these disc before so the problem is with the media(disc) its with the medium*the drive) I dont think flashing the firware in this case will hely you will need to replace the drive :)
I Have A : HL-DT-ST- DVD-RAM GSA-H22N DVD Burner That Works Fine With (CD Burning/ Reading) & (Data Burning/ Reading) But I Have A Very WIERD Problem With The DVD : Here I Go, When I Use Any Program To Burn DVD Like Nero, DVD Shrink Etc.. (It Appears That) The Movie Is Burning Well, Because In The Burning Process It Doesn't Says Something Like:Bad Disc, Not Succefully Burned Or Any Sign That The DVD Burner Is Damaged , Also When It Finish Recording You Can See The Data Burned In The Disc By The Lines It Forms BUT !! I Don't Know WHY The Fu$%@@ , When You Test The Movie In Any DVD Player , Comp OR Whatever THE MOVIE DOESN'T WORK.
