Re: My Acer T180

The plug should look like a headphone jack, a small round plug. It should follow industry standard color coding and be shaded green along the outside edge of the circle. So look for a small green circle plug on the back of the computer. I hope this has explained your question in detail. If I've helped you please don't forget to rate me. Peter

I have another computer i want to install in the up i need another dsl router to connect to it????.

If you have a Westell 6100, it's just a modem meant to connect a single computer to the Internet. It has the jack where you plug in the cord to your DSL phone line, and an Ethernet jack so you can plug in your computer. You can't have more than one of these connected to the phone line because of address conflicts that would result.

What you need is a wireless router so your Internet connection can be shared by several computers. Most service providers are installing Westell models that combine the modem and a 4-port wired/wireless router for new customers now. Since you have the modem only, you'll need to supply the router. The wireless function lets you use the upstairs computer without having to run a network cable to connect it. That's much cleaner and simpler. There will be four connectors on the back of the router for wired computers or other things (such as a network printer) you might want to connect. You still have only one connection to your DSL line, but now you can hook up several computers at once.

There are several companies making wireless routers and they all do pretty much the same thing. Netgear, Linksys and D-Link are the most common, and you can buy a wireless router at almost any retailer that sells computers. You can also find them online from companies like TigerDirect or Newegg. Other than staying with one of the major brands (it's easier to find support for those if you need it), there's not much to recommend one kind over another.

It's pretty easy to install a wireless router and set up your wireless network. They all come with a CD containing setup software that will guide you through the process. You'll have that upstairs machine on line in no time.

I bought a laptop just a month ago and it is not working properly, it will download firefox, or a game but not run it? There is no backup disk how can I make the computer back to the way it was when I...

Depending upon the brand, there is a key combination, which will usually take you to the manufacturer's "hidden partition." In those circumstances, there will then be a series of options, including rebuilding the computer as if it has just come out of the box. Doing something similar, but not destroying the files you may have created - DOCs, XLSs, etc - since buying the laptop.
Basically, if you use that key combination, you can rebuild your laptop as if it has just been taken out of the box from the store, and then you will have to start all over again, and again ... as if you have just taken it home from the store.
My suggestion is that if this laptop is only one month old, and whatever happened to it was something you caused to happen, as opposed to it being a problem caused by a bad computer, then restart the computer as if it was just brought home.
It will take time to redo things, but you will be happier, in that you will have a brandy new PC all over again.
I did this about three separate times after buying my Acer two years ago, knowing that the problems were of my own creation, not something that was caused by a bad computer.
Since then, almost exactly two years ago, I have been extremely pleased with this laptop and, as a professional systems consultant, am confident when asked what brand laptop I recommend to a client, responding that they can buy an Acer. It is less expensive than a Lenovo or an HP – HP being one which I also recommend – and just as reliable as anything else on the market.
So go ahead, rebuild, and have fun! It actually helps you to learn more about your new system along the way. And learning is fun, too!

The first thing you need to do is take out the modem from your pc.The model number should be on the modem somewhere. The other thing you can do is download a program to help you identify the model brand and number.

Is it possible to use Voip without a direct Internet connection?? For example I use wireless Internet from my neighbors connection.

LOL!! I know with Vonage you need a hard line cat 5. With the usb things like magic jack, since that directly plugs into your computer, my assumption is it wouldn't matter whether you were wireless or not.

troubleshooting a network is a multiple step process.
1. Establish that your modem is working properly, and plugged in. As per the diagram shown here:
  • Your "Cable link" light should be on (signifying that the outside cable is properly connected to the router)
  • Your "Internet" light should be on (signifying you have an established Internet connection)
  • And, most importantly, your "PC Link" light should be on (showing that at least as far as the modem is concerned, it is detecting that the computer is plugged in to it.
2. double check to make sure that the network cables are seated properly, and plugged in all the way. the PC link light should give you an indication for modem-side- the LED light around the network cable jack on the laptop should give you an indication PC-side.
3. check on your laptop for any security software that may restrict new networks from being detected and disable them to test. For example, Symantec or Mcaffee Firewall can sometimes block a "new" network from being detected.
4. Completely shut down the laptop and unplug the power cord from the modem. Plug the modem back in. Wait around 3 minutes for the modem to initialize and do it's thing- then turn on your laptop and see if this resolved your issue.
If this doesn't work, you may want to try other things, such as resetting your network, and removing/re-installing your network adapter drivers.

Toshiba Cable Modem PCX1100u

OK. First of all you do not need a special or seperate driver for the Ethernet port. Its factory loaded with your OS.

All you need to do is plug the Ethernet cable into the LAN port on your HP Desktop and then into the LAN port (not the WAN port) of your cable modem.

The second thing is if its only a cable modem, then I suggest you proceed with caution as there is NO built-in firewall on a cable modem. Yes you will get on the net, but you are likely to be attacked with virus the moment you connect. I suggest you check very carefully whether the cable modem (if that's what it is) does/does not have a firewall as you would be very unwise connecting up like that.

Next, forget USB connection to the router/cable modem. That technolgy we've moved on from.. Your Vista shodul be 'plug n play' adn should configure the router for you. obviously that bit isn't so slick on yours.

Let me know how you get on..

Speedstream 5200 modem

Open the following link --

speedstream 5200

Download the manual from the link and review page 7 for ethernet connection.

Notice particularly the back of the device. There are four connection points to plug things in the one on the left with DSL is where cable with the phone connectors connects the phone jack to the speedstream 5200. On the right the round connector with the pin is where the power goes. Next to the power connector to the left is a USB connector. In between usb connector and the DSL port is an ethernet connector. One way to avoid the need for the USB software os to use the ethernet connector bu connecting an ethenet cable (wider connector that fits snugly in both ports one on the Speadstream 5200 and the other probably present on your computer.

USB driver including VISTA (if you prefer)

USB driver link
