Question about Grundig YB 400PE AM/FM/SW Radio

1 Answer

Buttons Don't Work

I was having problems with my YB so I pressed the Reset switch. I am not sure that did anything other than wipe out my memories, but I have several buttons that don not function properly or at all. * The Power button does not work at all. The only way I can turn the radio on is to use the Sleep function. * The Forward memory button does not work. I can only scroll through memories in the backwards direction. * The 4, 5, and 6 buttons do not function properly. They enter 1, 2, and 3 respectively. All of the other number buttons input the correct numbers. Is there anything I can do to get this radio working properly or does it need factory service, which I am assuming would be prohibitively expensive?

Re: Buttons Don't Work

I would strongly lean towards factory service. Sounds like the circuit board has problems.

Good luck.

How to set memory

Here is a specific example. To store
BBC's evening frequency to North America, 5975 kilohertz, into
memory 32, do the following:
1. Press 5975
2. Immediately press the FREQU./METER button
3. Press 3 2
4. Immediately press the STORE button. If the display
flashes, it means that a frequency is already stored into
this memory. To overwrite it, immediately press STORE
again. If you do not want to overwrite it, start over and
use a different memory.

Can't pick up any stations

Some Grundig models have a history of poor front end design where just a bit of static electricity will wipe out tuning. Serious flaw.

Changing Time Setting

It is not intuitive, but the way to set the time is as follows:
1) be ready with your reference time - like your wristwatch with a second hand
2) make sure the YB is OFF (important!!!)
3) press the TIME I/II key so that you see the YB display TIME I. This is IMPORTANT!
4) you will be entering the time in 24 hour format WITH a leading zero if necessary!!!
5) at about 3 seconds BEFORE your time mark, key in the time with the following keystrokes:

H,H,decimal point,M,M

6) IMMEDIATLY press the TIME I/II key !!! This is VERY important!!!
You get only about 1 second of time to press this key after you enter the unit minutes.
If you miss the window, it shows an error or reverts to the wrong time.

The only way to sync the seconds is to time it just right with your reference.

If you want to set Time II, FIRST set Time I, THEN press the TIME I/II key to get the
display to show TIME II. Then you can enter the TIME II time in 24 hour format, H,H,decimal point, M,M, then TIME I/II. You don't have to worry about syncing the seconds for TIME II - it is locked to TIME I.

F.Y.I. -- This time I am prepared - I put these instructions on a sticker behind the folding stand on the back of the YB so I don't have to search for the stupid manual again!

Some Grundig models have a history of being friend by just small amounts of static electricity such as walking across a rug. It wipes out the tuning circuit.

Cuts off

This is simply a low battery issue. If you replace the batteries it should work. Apparently, the unit has a voltage sensor that cuts off the radio when the voltage drops too low. However, eventhough the radio will not run, there is still sufficient voltage left in the batteries to run the light.

This is why the radio will run when plugged into AC.

Hope this works for you !!!!
