The defrost timer is basically a small clock motor that opens and shuts the freezer contacts at predetermined times. If it fails, it can be turned with a screwdriver to check it. Use the largest flat blade screwdriver that will fit into the hole. Give it 1 or 2 full turns and see if that takes care of your problem. If you hear the fridge running but still have defrost issues, it.s an airflow problem.
